Diatomaceous Earth for pest control
    #784131 - 07/02/15 05:47 PM (9 years, 5 months ago)

Hello all,

I am an outdoor gardener an I was wondering if any one here has used diatomaceous earth to help get rid of grasshoppers.

Grasshoppers are tearing my plants up and I need help stopping this.

Is azamax a good spray to rid them as well?

Thanks all advice is appreciated

I used it but only briefly. was too messy indoors...
The guy at the grow shop was telling me how effective it is and he's pretty skilled all around

The grasshoppers are topping the shit out of a few different plants. Like eating just the very top of the branch.

One plant looks as if its gonna die?

They say safersoap is a good grasshopper rid. Maybe I'll try that?

Used the diatomaceous earth and it has worked great on the ground outside of the planters.

I have sprayed 3 evenings in a row with azamax an that seems to have done the trick

Hope for some big buds!!

DE is used to dry insects out, as a desicant. I was told that its small particles shred the insects up, but I havent been able to find anything that confirmed that. It turns to sludge if you wet a layer of it, like on the top. Kinda like plaster/

I tried it and tested it several times and what I've found is that it's hype. Every bug I've seen walks right threw it like it's sugar. Suppose to cause microscopic scratches in the shell or the exoskeleton of the bugs causing them to dry out. The stuff didn't effect one type of bug. (that is unless you pour the contents on them and smother em) The first time I tested it and heard about it was in the late 80s

From what I hear it's great stuff. From what I've seen useless crap.

like I was saying you need to keep it dry so it can act as a dessicant. That micro scratch theory doesn't seem to hold up. Maybe on certain things like larva or something but the hardier insects seem to resist it.

I spread it heavily around the area and o have not noticed any grasshoppers.

It might not have killed them but it made them stay away.

It was kept as a dry powder for use on the outside of the planter.

The azamax may have helped as well

I use DE for outdoor gardening mainly for earwigs.  I find it extremely effective.

Magash, I dont think you'll see the little suckers die instantly right after they get the DE on their bodies.  It takes a while.

I also know someone who uses it for an indoor grow effectively to eradicate fungus gnats.

Nice. I did notice that the DE made the grasshoppers leave the area.

It probably irritated them to want to go away. Or they wandered off and died?

Well oregon.trailboy, I think the sweetness in plants is the reason for ants getting attracted to the plumerias. Diatomaceous earth would work for destroying ants, but only for a temporary period. A few days ago I was also facing the problem with rats in my garden and inside my house, but with rats destroying to my household things, one of my friends suggested me to take helpful hints from Professional Exterminator Sacramento CA. Likewise, You can also try out contacting some Professional Ant Exterminator for some permanent solution over ant problem.

I mixed hot sauce with water in a spray bottle, cayenne pepper gets jammed unless you dissolve it into hot water then put it in.

Orange Guard is a product that I bootleged myself with limonene and an emulsifier. It destroyed the mites and took a long time to come back in the veg tent slowly(the flowering plants that had been infested in veg never showed ANY signs of mites). There was DE sprinkled all over the tent floor and even on the plants, but they still made a comeback.

I think the DE is probably the most effective as something you sprinkle on your plants/bugs, then wash it off in a few hours later; as it doesn't seem to be effective over time, but also it seemed to mess the plants up from absorbing light/growing properly with DE all over it the whole time.

I've been using Nuke Em for mites lately.  I know it's only citric acid, but it's working wonders

Ya more of a prevention thing. Doesn't kill everything although at the seed and feed get 25 kg bags for 11 bucks the girl used it on her horse for fleas and said it worked.

Does work keeping g slugs off stuff. They hate it.

Also adds trace minerals Silica to ur medium ")

I had crab lice once, I know it was only once, but KwellTM shampoo did the trick.  I'd use it again if I got them again.  That shit works wonders.  Not to pick nits, I'm sure there is an "equal" out there but why risk it?
