GrowLog: Mags Rainbow 1
#827578 - 07/22/17 07:14 PM (7 years, 4 months ago) |

[07/22/2017] Started six seeds in a wet paper towel between two plates.
The parameters include
Strain: Some crazy shit Magash sent me. Said "Rainbow Fems" on em.
Area: 2x8' area. Closet.
Lights: 1000w LED. Advanced LED DS400, DS400 light board (no lenses/case) and some DS100's off to the side. Veg lights will probably be the same, but for now they're under a DIY LED with all white diodes (20w)
Nutrients: Canna Coco A/B Big Time Enzyme Earth Juice Cal/Mag (not a fan of it, too much humic acid makes it muddy, finishing the bottle) Canna P-K MB Ferts Boost Silica, Europonics. Not a fan of this either, too basic and doesn't mix well. Harder to use than regular silica. I like Pro-tekt but they were out.
and I need to find some sort of root accelerator. I have some samples of Elete root accelerator I'll probably try. The stuff seemed to really work well on the last plants I used it on.
I'll veg until I feel they are ready to go. I need to get them into flower soon, but I'll probably top them once to help spread out the canopy.

5/6 popped with 1/4" roots. #6 looks like it started to but not quite popped. About 34 hours from when I got them wet--Fastest germination I've ever seen.

Planted them all. The last seed started to crack and a tiny tap root was emerging. I planted it this morning. Its about a day and a half behind the others. I almost tossed it.

Some issues with some of the seedlings. Two of them appear to be burned. Either nutrient or light burn. I turned down the intensity of the lights and flushed with plain water and followed up with a little root stimulator. I want to add a little base nutrient to the next feed. One decided to take a nap.

Was wondering how long it took before someone came lurking... I was gonna move this to the grow log section once things picked up a bit more.

Wow, I've never seen the 'active journals' link before. Maybe I'll leave it here for people to randomly stumble upon.
Update:
Added some Canna A/B to the feed today. about 400ppm, no measurements just eyeballed it right into the gallon from the 5 liter jug. Lazyness is a bitch, I hope it pays out.
I was going to wait a few days to feed but they're a bit too yellow-green for my liking. I never should have used that Burpee's 'organic' seed starting mix. I emailed the company months ago when I bought it and they said it had very little nutrients in it and just enough to get the seeds started. Next time its back to my formula of 50/50 coco and 'seed starting mix'.
Down to 5 and two are not looking that great. Hope they recover, otherwise I'll have to fill the void in the flower room some how.

Things are progressing slowly. In a heat wave. The two damaged plants are recovering and moving forward. Other plants are showing an elongated set of first true leaves.

The two that were damaged early on decided to both keel over. Its pretty hot today, around 90F. Gonna prop them up and see how that helps. The oscillating fan I had on them stopped oscillating so I just have it off to the side a little. They're swaying a little but apparently not enough.

Been a few days. Watered them a few times, first at 4ml/gal then 9ml/gal. full strength is 15ml/gal and I think I'm going to give it to them next time. They look ready.
Its amazing how they are small for 2 straight weeks and it seems like there's nothing really happening, then all of a sudden one day they're like 3 or 4 times the size. That was the other day. Now they're starting to look like real plants.
One runt. Its one that was damaged/burned early on. The other that was burned at the same time was the one that fell over first, but is since recovering and stands without the stick anymore. The other that needed a stick is now independent.
What helped was compacting the coco a bit around the base. The coco must have been a bit loose, especially from watering.

So I guess day 35? since popping them. Two are not doing so well. Three are doing great but some side stretching. Seems like they might like a good topping.
One runt and one lanky plant not gonna make the cut. I might throw them into the flower room in a space-available capacity.
Finally labeled them: White #1 Yellow #2 Blue #3
White seems like the best structure, with less stretch from side branches. Its showing some early iron/zinc/sulfur deficiency and I started spraying with foliar chelated iron/zinc.
Been feeding full strength nutrients for the past 2 or 3 times. Pretty much every other day. Gonna transplant them today to 3.6g "5 gallon" Airpots.
The two on the right are obviously different. I fear the tall lanky one might turn out male.
I'm going to let the best three go for a few days and decide which one I'll keep as a mother. I'll trim some lower branches in early flower and see how they take. If they don't root then the plant is not worth my time. I have a bunch of seeds so I'll use it as a standard for comparing potential mothers.
WWMD?

Transplanted them the next day after reading canna's guidelines on reusing coco. I pre-wet the coco overnight because its dried since last time.
Got a pineapple express that was a mother plant that I decided to toss in with the three. Gonna probably throw them into flower in about a week.
Realized that the power on the light was down to minimum. So when I transplanted it I bumped it up to about 25% power.
honorary shout out to my bell peppers that just swelling up.

Growing well. I almost feel like I should have topped them due to height restraints but I don't really want to wait a few more days to let them recover by doing it now. Flipping into flower right now.
Gonna run the lights 11am to 11pm. Its hotter in the day but I want to be able to turn my fans down at night for noise.
Also decided to use the 4x4 tent instead of the 2x8 closet. The closet is too hot and has accessibility issues.
Haven't check the temperature in the tent yet but its pretty hot. Some heat stress in the form of leaf curl and pointing directly up on the top colas.
I turned the light back down to near the lowest setting while his heat wave endures. It was almost 90 degrees outside today.

Woke up in the middle of the night and found my tent glowing from the zipper. Apparently the #2 function was set to turn on at midnight but no off time. Musta accidentally hit the button when I was resetting it. Glad I found out on the first day.

Some more bullshit...
The humidity was obviously pretty high when I opened the tent this morning. The fan was off. I was using a 8" booster fan that's pretty old. It was kinda loud so I put it on a speed controller. That controller says "don't use on brushless or DC motors" and might have been the cause of the burn out. I did notice that the thing only turned on when in the last bit of the dial. I thought I'd be good for one night, but nope...
New one on order for $26. I have the full size 8" inline in the closet that I could use but don't want to hook it for noise reasons. Its also harder to mount--drill holes in ceiling and bungee cords. The booster fits right into the tent vent and can have ducting go directly out the window. I normally wouldn't want to use a booster fan as my main fan but since the window is so close it shouldn't be a problem until maybe next summer when its hot again.

Set the light up to the maximum height by taking out the rope ratchets. The large plant in the back looks like it will be fine but still at risk of getting a little bleached if it continues to grow.
Got the ozone generator set up inside my exhaust fan. I pulled the big fan out of the other closet for the time being and I've got the hot air finally blowing out of my apartment. Just gotta readjust the cycle stat on the ozone generator to blow about 50% of the time so the ozone is not overbearing.
I also set up a little bit better irrigation system. I'll get some photos of that later.
So far the plants are really healthy looking. I was planning on doing some screen printing and was considering using one of the larger fan leaves as a pattern. They all have a really nice fat healthy main stem. I've been pinching them back to slow the stretch down.
Still trying to decide which one to clone and keep.

There's a point where the plants just exploded in new growth. It was right after I watered them. They got much larger. Its strange how that works, they always need fresh nutrients even though the pots still have a lot of water. They need the fresh stuff to keep things in full production.
The last photo shows my thumb behind the main stalk. They're all pretty fat. One in the back left grew so much so fast that when I went to pinch it back to stop it it was already split open.
Very open structure to the plant so far. Should be nice not having to worry about PM too much.

Two are full blown hermaphrodite. One pod already blew all over my pineapple express and a few more are about to pop. I've never had a plant go full hermaphrodite on me. Usually its a stress-response naners within the buds, this one has actual pollen sacs.
I might just pull those two today and focus on the one and hope I don't see anything develop.
A little bit of damage on the main colas but they were tied over about week ago while I was gone.

No way it was severely stressed. Mildly from the intensity of the light but the overall temperature and humidity have been good. It would have only been close to the light for 3-5 days before it got tied down and out of the way.
How long does it take for sacs to develop and pop open?

I've never heard of too much light causing a hermie, light leaks on the other hand... Do you have your light run in the dayu with the dark period at night? I do just the opposite because my AC uses so much juice. I had a problem with hermies until I properly light proofed my room.

Just cauwe obv dont believe people who know more here is quoted text "Heat - When temps get too high hermies and nanner often appear.
Too-Bright Light - Like too much heat, light that is too bright can stress your plants and trigger hermies. This is most often caused by growers keeping their lights to close to their plants. You can light-burn your plants even when temperature is under control."
1 problem with the site people are trusted cultivators and have no idea how hermi happen lol its like all the master growers these days.

Please stop with the condescending attitude. Yes, I understand that it is a stress source, I do not believe it was so stressed from it that it was the main culprit. It very well could be but I'd like to think about it more before I draw any conclusions.
Right now we are 'discussing' not shit talking. Please edit your post to eliminate that ninny attitude and stop trolling me. If you cannot further the discussion please do not bother to respond.
Asking again... How long does it take for sacs to develop and pop open?

In my experience they can show up and pop open within a week, I've only ever dealt with hermies, don't know if all male flowers do that. Also my weren't banana shaped, they looked like normal male flowers but were mixed in with the female flowers

Remember its not only liggt but HEAT that burnt ur leaves to say tgat isnt a severe stress i think ur only fooling yourself. Its killing it lol. In veg sure will be ok but just as they are starting to flower to burn them ohysically
Oops in dif window this was an earlier post.
As for sacs form as fast as a new calyx/pistil and open 2 weeks to days as depends on its development. If fully formed male flower 1 day to a week to open and drop. And as far as stress induced hermi to be seen week week and a half is my best guess from stressor time to see male flower. If spray with silver it takes at least 10 days or so to see bananas but again varies on strain and growth enviro... if see bananas out of bud usually couple days before they open up and polinate.
If magash hasnt heard of the problem as if just the strain everyone would have hermies like all of yours. If thats the case then was not stress induced. But because were heat and light burnt just as initiated flower that def is a culprit. Not sure how could be any question to that as well documented to cause male flowers as per starter grow guide i posted.

"If magash hasnt heard of the problem as if just the strain everyone would have hermies like all of yours."
I believe he said he's never developed a strain so fast and that its relatively new.
"Not sure how could be any question to that as well documented to cause male flowers as per starter grow guide i posted."
I'm questioning the exact variables that caused it. In gardening its rarely just one thing. Timing plays a role in all of this and they were tied back by amateurs as they approached the light. I'm investigating so that I can eliminate ALL possible stressors in the future. YES, LIGHT-HEAT STRESSED IT, but was it the ONLY thing? At what point were they 'too close'? Were they herming before they were tied back or after?
I've had plants grow into the light before but they didn't have that problem. I've burned much more leaves without that problem. I've had plants closer for longer without that problem. Most plants don't get stressed from the light THAT easily. The one with the most sacs and open was the shortest of them all when I left and the plant that was tallest and closest to the light was rather difficult to find signs of sacs.
Could it have been the crushing and snapping of the main stalks to keep them from stretching? It could have contributed!
I'm sorry if you don't see the value in questioning everything that could possibly have contributed to the problem.
From that same link.
"Hermaphrodite Plants
Although growers will refer to all plants with gender problems as “hermies,” there are technically two different kinds, hermaphrodite cannabis plants, and mixed gender buds like buds with nanners. The only reason I bother to differentiate between the two is because true hermaphrodite plants are more predictable.
With a "true" hermaphrodite plant, the male and female parts will grow on different parts of the plant. They won't grow together in the same spot such as when nanners appear in the middle of buds.
What causes it? Stress can trigger this type of hermaphroditism, but unlike bananas, this particular type of mixed gender plant seems to be a little bit more based on the plant’s genetics. A clone of a true hermaphrodite plant will often also turn into a hermaphrodite, and offspring will often show the same traits. It does not take much stress for these plants to hermie."
Will you please stop being a _ _ _ _ about it? I'm done conversing with you.

I'm really interested in this discussion,, my sidewinder/rainbows/mags newest are just weeks from hitting flowering room... if like to know if we can figure the culprit here and hope it was not a selection issue when it comes to the seed we are using.. If those plants were stressed to point of hermie wouldn't the pineapple show some signs of stress? I'd think so even if it were white more stable/resilient... that leads me to think it is genetic... the doom looms Cheers

This quote of yours is what leads me to that belief.. this isn't your first rodeo and ime it takes quite a length of stress to fuck with a plants sexual structure. In other words I don't think these plants were in the stress hermie zone of dire straits

Again there is a big difference between growing into light while in veg and another while they are just starting to flower. Its like a light leak in veg vs a light leak in flower otherwise heat and to much light would not be a known cause of hermie. It burnt its the most extreme possible so to think anything else just seems silly to me. Its like saying ive had light leaks before in veg but never had a hermie so therefore this time the light leak didnt do it. Its funny how ones ego hazes the truth.
Like i said in first post it could be genetics but i think magash woulda said something if he had heard of it.

The pineapple express is a fairly resilient clone. I've grown it next to questionable seeds that were stressed into hermaphroditing and its been fine. I'll keep an eye on it and might continue with its progress in its new home.
My biggest problem is that I broke the tent down and chopped the plants so fast when I got home I didn't even have time to examine the situation. I had planned on actually paying attention when I walked into the house, but I found myself just turning on lights and opening the tent. And when I saw the plants tied back I started cutting before I took any photos. I should have checked to see if the tent was open at all but I was so tired I didn't even think about it.
The tent was in my living room and my apartment needed its yearly inspection. I broke the tent down so they wouldn't see it and I can't go back and test anything. It was very old and was just repaired. I checked for leaks but realize now that I added the feed loop right before I left and had to run it through a window. I didn't check again. I left my apartment in a hurry.
The time frame for a light leak fits if sac's develop and open in 10-14 days and I was gone for 12. Seems like they were triggered right as I left, when the plants were still within acceptable range of the light.
The shortest was about 18-24" away when it started to turn. Though its hard to say, as they grew fast enough to be touching the lights in 6 days (3-4" per day)
I also had a rat get in there and eat my bell peppers and all the leaves. I cut his food supply off before I left and set a trap but he took the bait without setting it off and got into my tent. It makes me wonder now if he was helping lollipop the plants while I was gone. The lowest stuff did look a bit oddly undeveloped. Saw it, forgot to get photos before I chopped the plants. He's gone now.
The buds smelled really dank and the thing has a lot of potential. Its wants to be a huge plant with spaced out colas. Its good for light penetration and airflow but hard to grow such a beast in a tent. She needs headroom or a good topping. Vigorous growth like this is rare. These plants WANTED to grow. I still have the remaining seeds and may give them another shot in the future.

Hey I haven't heard of the problem but I'm sure as hell am not gonna say it couldn't have happen. When I let these batches go I asked if everybody wanted me to test then first or let them go right now cause the batch I was making at the time was just for here and everybody said now.
I believe that is where Phychotron gets this Quote:
I believe he said he's never developed a strain so fast and that its relatively new.
I sold about 600 seeds here and non since early in the year but it has been for sale since January so if there is a problem with the seeds it should have shown itself months ago. (I got hit by a drunk driver and had surgeries on my arm and back why I've been gone from here so much lately)
Now I did have time to stress test the parent plants used and they did pass. Outdoor growers also seem to be having no problems. (The problem if there is one could be limited to a specific batch of these seeds which may be why others don't have the problem I do realize this but like I said there have been no other complaints and somebody has had to flower them by now) I'd think if it was genetics I would think a few others would have had the problem by now I did sell about 600 of them here.
Sorry grammar is even worse then usual gotta do the one handed typing thing till early next year.

Well I haven't had any other complaints yet but like I said I didn't pretest so who knows it could be my fault. All the seeds were sold the first 3 months of this year so I would have expected to hear something before this.

Half these sidewinders half sitting bull which I just pulled off impressive buds from on my first ever outdoor harvest, done in living soil. All organic/slow inputs compost/worm casting tea molasses and the like:. I'll throw some pics up once I get that DE plugged in and running with some greenery under..

So I'll edit this with a pic tonight but I second everytihing psychotron mentioned about the growth/vigor of this plant and the way (2 phenos in particular) really like to spread out the branches/colas.. So I've been in flowering so far just mags sidewinder for 2 1/2 weeks or so an I am happy to say that they are healthy beautiful ladies with no tendency yet towards hermaphroditism so let's assume it was simply a stress situation on the part of the ladies in this thread.. These plants I'm keeping smallish as I'm trying to cram my space maybe throw a screen over the canopy of these gals in my new room.. Waiting on lights on for an eAsy pic..
Cheers Edit for pics
