29 gallon planted freshwater tank
    #810710 - 04/13/16 05:51 PM (8 years, 6 months ago)

My wife had a 29 gallon tank that she set up for some american cichlids and barbs, but didn't like the looks of it.

She gave me some money and asked me to make it look nice.So I went shopping at my local fish store, and did a little research...and this is what I came up with.

The large white rock in the middle is holding down the driftwood until it becomes fully waterlogged.

I'll update once in a while, and we'll see how all the plants grow in.

Nope. That actually looks sick. Once i get more space i plan on getting into planted tanks too.

Also, have yall seen that video where the brother tricks his medicated sister into thinking theres a zombie apocalypse?

Without seeing it personally, a month should do it.  But it will leach tannins etc. and kick your ph towards acidic for awhile so, keep on top of your balances in that scenario.  Eventually in the long term it will go from pushing towards making your water more acid to when the wood starts breaking down, nitrates.  So there's a switch.  It will start to break down, but that takes awhile, literal breakdown.

Keep observing, taking notes, watch.  And usually you can look at a specific tank and "read" where it is at.  It's a matter of spending enough time with it, as all you plant fellers, I'm sure you know.

Are you going to add any fish? What are you using for oxygen.

I have added 12 neon tetras, 5 cherry barbs, 2 siamese algae eaters, 1 apisto, 2 amano shrimp, and 2 nerite snails.

I have a canister filter with a spray bar that disturbs the surface, and I'm using a pressurized CO2 injection system with my LED light, so the plants sucks up nitrates and phosphates, and saturate the water with oxygen (you'll actually see the plants "pearling" with small oxygen bubbles).

I'm dosing with iron and trace elements right now, and have seen 0ppm on ammo ia, nitrites, and nitrates for the last 2 weeks. If I noticed any of the plants struggling I'll probably have to either get more fish or start dosing with macro nutrients soon.

You added all those fish and didn't get any ammonia showing up during the cycling?  And no nitrites/nitrates?  Where's the ammonia going?  You must be doing hella water changes but even then you'll still get a little red on your nitrate test.  What's your secret?  (And don't say the plants!:crankey: )

I seeded my biological media with media from a cycled 60 gallon. I also dosed with Seachem Stability for the first few days.

Doin it the right way. I love when people buy EVERYTHING the same day, toss it ALL into the tank, turn on their shitty rated tetra HOB filter, and then wonder why shit starts dying off.

Yea I took the time to do my research, and I've had a few low-tech tanks in the past.

Thanks buddy for the inspiration :highfive:

That cancels the ammonia right but are you telling me those plants eat ALL the nitrates? All of them?

All I'm saying is that I'm using the nitrate test per the instructions, and it gives me a color that most closely resembles the 0ppm color indication. Whether or not its actually 0ppm, 0.5ppm, or 2.5ppm...

I will say that when i had my 60 gallon stocked similarly, I ended up having to by an NPK fert line for my tank because i couldn't feed my fish enough to keep the nitrates high enough to get the pearling that I wanted.

You can believe what you want to believe, I'll keep saying 0ppm until my tests say otherwise :gethigh:

That's what's up.  I'm not calling bullshit or anything just curious.  I've seen people run their tank water through gutter systems above their tanks so they have live plants on top and it eats up their nitrates.

More than one way to skin a cat right?  I've seen people do all kinds of off the wall shit that works.

Ah I gotcha, and yea I had considered a lettuce aeroponics system to run my 60 gallon waters through...but I'm finding that a heavily planted tank, co2 injection, and a couple of good lights can really eat up some nitrates.
