WEST MIFFLIN, PA (WCMH) — Police say several Pennsylvania high school students will face charges after they were caught sharing gummy candies laced with the active ingredient in marijuana.
West Mifflin police told the Associated Press that the candies were first described as gummy bears, but they were actually a candy known as “Kushy Punch.” Police say all the student at West Mifflin High School who purchased or ate the candy knew what it contained.
“It basically looked like a square block of a gummy candy that was packaged and wrapped to identify itself as a pain reliever,” Superintendent Dr. Daniel Castagna told WPXI-TV.
Kushy Punch is a medical marijuana taffy made in California. It comes in compact sizes with multiple powerful doses of the drug THC.
Quote: With over 70mg of active cannabinoids, each Kushy Punch packs the potency of several slightly less powerful doses of 17.5mg of THC. In fact, each Kushy Punch is packaged as one slab that is then wrapped up in wax paper and marked as 4 individual doses on the package’s sticker.
One student was taken to the hospital as a precaution after eating the candy. School district superintendent Daniel Castagna tells WTAE-TV that the student will be okay.
Parents have been notified and were cooperating with school officials and police.
The students involved will face school discipline and police say at least some of them will faces drug possession charges in juvenile court once lab tests on the candy are complete.
