Carbon filter direct to fan to duct to light/hood to duct out the room/tent.

That doesn't sound like it would be very efficient for the smell..You'd still have all the loose air around the light/hood going into the exhaust. If you have it as:
LIGHT -> (DUCT HOSE) -> [CARBON FILTER] -> INLINE FAN -> (DUCT HOSE) ->
Then the ventilating air will pass through the light to the duct hose to cool it off

Yeah for the filter to work as designed, it must be connected to the fan. Myself I just run filter to fan out the room. My hood/light has it's own fan and only fresh air goes thru it so no filter needed. A duct from outside to hood to duct to fan outside kinda thing.
But not everyone wants two fans, when one can do the job just fine.

Isn't it connected to the fan like that? And true, not everyone does. This is for the people that do that just want an idea on how to set the thing up. This post would've been helpful to me when I was trying to figure it out.
