You always hear the old adage "I would not touch that with a ten foot pole"....in what scenario is it appropriate/ideal to touch something with a ten foot pole?

These phrases are often pretty dope to look up. "Rule of thumb" is said to refer to that you could only beat your wife with a stick the diameter of your thumb. I just read a little of that on wiki too, and there is some confusion there if that's true or not, but it's what I always heard.
