Just watched the doc. Pretty good stuff
That electricity producing bike was cool. If we replaced all the stationary bikes at gyms with these, we could get lots of free power. I feel that most people are too lazy to ride that for a hour a day, even if it did produce electricity for 24hrs

Well it's not really for lazy North Americans, it's for the impoverished of the world living without power. I have no doubt that the poorest people in the world would love to use this bike to make themselves power.

Either way, unless you can do an cost benefit analysis that factors in the energy, money, and waste generated in mining the raw meterial ores, refining, casting/machining, etc. and prove that each machine will operate long enough to completely offset the total cost, then it will be nothing more than a novelty.
I feel that is beside the point. We do many things that do not have a positive cost/benefit under those parameters for reasons of other benefits. It would be a way of propping up the poor, subsidizing them sort of. Regardless of if more energy is used to mine and process all those materials, it doesn't mean that it isn't an efficient way to bring a portion of that energy to them, you know... versus like building all that electrical infrastructure.

I hear where you are comin from, and I agree that this is a great option for say a small village, miles away from any other human, where investment in a less efficient system far outweighs the cost to run transmission lines out just for that village.
I also agree that it's that CEO's money, and the fact that he's actually doing something like this with that money is a noble way to spend billions of dollars. I think that it's a temporary solution, and a good one at that, but it will not revolutionize humanity's dependance on energy, and at that scale it would be better to invest resources, refinement energy, and capital toward alternative energy sources.
Just saying, fossil fuels are running out quickly, it won't help anybody if we use up all of our resources building temporary solutions, and ignore the obvious overarching problem coming down the pipeline.
Either way, the bike is a good design for a 'propping up' of isolated or poverty-stricken people. It's a major step, I won't argue with you there.

Yeah fasho. Also if you really dialed in that model and made it 'universal', with only a few consumable parts that are easy to replace, it could potentially last generations and produce far more than the input.

That would be something of worth right there, because then it wouldn't become refined material that is discarded in remote locations to rot...but could be regularly recycled. It may even encourage infrastructure upgrades in the area surrounding isolated communites to support part orders and recycling programs (to reduce the total maintenance costs to the consumer).
