Semi-Hydroponic?
    #793135 - 09/10/15 01:29 PM (9 years, 2 months ago)

So back at the shroomery, a moderator suggested i put my plant in a "semi-hydroponic" substrate which he described as 50% perlite mixed with 50% soil.

Then use dilute liquid fertilizer for every watering.

Anyone familiar with this? Is it better than plain soil?

Thanks.

That's not hydro that's just soil. He may be referring to using coir and perlite which is considered hydro.

He specifically mentioned using "best soil as u can afford" mixed half with perlite.

Could it work?

Or is coir with perlite more of a true standard?

Perlite just fluff's up the soil-- its a volcanic rock If you have really compact soil it will help with aeration. Most soils have some perlite in it. If your soil is too compact it will allow roots to grow faster.

Go buy a small bag and see how you like it.

Thanks.

Do you think a soil mix of 50% perlite is a good medium?

If you want to do a hydro grow and a non-traditional way you will need peatmoss and perlite. Peatmoss isn't soil, very airy, and marijuana loves it. You will have to feed hydro nutes as well, as soil nutes generally run a little stronger(in certain areas)

That sounds like the Hydro method Fertigation. Which is the simplest form of hydroponics. The plants are grown in regular planting containers. They are filled with non-nutritive planting mix and watered by hand, drip systems or using a capillary mat. Nutrients are supplements using nutrient/water solution.

Or it also sounds like the hydro method: The Reservoir System;
Plants are grown in ordinary plant containers of the chosen size. The containers are put into a tray that has walls 4-6 inches high. Containers are filled with clay beads. Alternatively the bottom third of the container is filled with beads and the top portion is filled with hydroponic mix such as vermiculite/perlite, peat moss etc etc...

:thumbup: I would say this is better than soil, yes, it is even used commercially so.
