Natural Odor Masks
    #664 - 04/20/08 07:58 AM (16 years, 6 months ago)

It is truly an honor to make the first of many threads in the Indoor Soil Cultivation forum! I have a friend who will be growing soon and they are curious about ways to mask the sweet sweet aroma of growing plants. Any kind of filtration probably isn't an option at this point. Its a small room and there's a bigger room between it and the door which leads out to an area where anyone could walk by (although not a lot of people probably do). Its very secure otherwise and its hard to say how well odor would be kept from making it outside....

But since there's a bigger room in between, the friend is wondering if there are any kinds of plants that could be grown in there which would have their own odor which would cover up or neutralize the smell from the plants, and that wouldn't smell suspicious themselves?

Thanks for the help!

Jasmine and mint? Those are pretty potent smellers - though the Jasmine won't stay in bloom all the time, so mint would probably be the better choice. Then again, marijuana is a really strong smell, so I'm not sure if you're going to find a plant that can effectively overpower it odor-wise, at least not during the final flowering stage.

I'd go with lavender and mint. Both are very fresh smelling, and cleanly. They may just add to the smell though. You might end up with an amalgamation of weed, lavender and mint scent. Couldn't say for sure though.

Personally I prefer Rosemary. Its a pungent smell that can drown out just about any other lingering smell. Even with the smell of potent bud blended in with it, the rosemary overtakes the stench easily.

Rosemary is a very overpowering smell and an extremely robust plant. Lavender is not so easy to grow.

If your friend cannot mask the smell yet with proper filtration. I suggest he not risk his freedom until he can grow properly and covertly.

Carbon scrubber, FTW!

also coould definetly use ozium right now.

I heard that an ionizer would work well to hide/eliminate the odor of weed.

I have no experience in this area, so take what I say with a grain of salt.

Rosemary sounds like something to go with. My next question is regarding negative ion chargers. Are they commonly available and how much would one expect to pay?

I would just use rosemary. It's also very easy to grow, and it's handy for cooking, too.

I'm thinking some rosemary in the room leading to the grow area, but there is a way he can get a ventilation system going I think, so carbon filter for the exhaust as well, and the air would get pulled away from the direction he's really concerned about the smell being at. It should work I think.

He should definitely go for the ventilation system with carbon filter. Flowering cannabis has a VERY strong odor.

Well he was precluding ventilation at first due to the specifics of the room, but there is an old vent in the room. Trouble is its hard to say exactly where it goes, but he took a closer look at it today (its simply just a hole in the wall at the top of the room with some grating over it), and it seems like it is simply a little passage way from the top of the building, with a little gentle breeze flowing down. Its an unattached room and it appears that none of the actual apartments connect to it.

Either way, I think the carbon filtration will be enough to neutralize the smell for the exhaust, the only real concern I think is there not being enough downward pressure to keep it from exhausting out. I don't think it would be.

This is an interesting topic to me so I did a little research.
Check these ideas.
"Fabric softener sheets are a good source of 24/7 odor control also - they can be laid in a windowsill or hung in inconspicuous places around the home."
"Growing indoor flowering plants, or fragrant herbs such as lemon sage or castor beans, works very well, especially when placed in sunny spots to promote the spread of the scents of these plants."

I don't no, some different ideas... Good Luck!

Not sure about your question, but it looks like someone is a Celestial Seasons drinker. Since I moved out of the States, I've really missed my CS White Plum tea. That stuff kicks ass, all kinds of antioxidants and a daily dose of Vitamin C in one cup. :yesnod:

 I'm going to have my dad start sending me tea bags of that.

I don't know enough about carbon filters to answer your question though. I definitely need to learn more about that.
