Country singer Willie Nelson will launch his own cannabis line called Willie’s Reserve in the 20+ states where marijuana is legal for recreational and medical uses. Nelson will reportedly have his own brand of pot available in 2016.
Willie Nelson, 81, has long been an advocate for cannabis. He is one of many other famous celebrities, like Woody Harrelson, Snoop Dogg and Seth Rogen, who has often spoken out for the legalization of pot and against the war on drugs. The On the Road Again singer is also a supporter of other social and environmental issues, but the decriminalization and legalization of cannabis is one issue he has a personal interest in, as Willie Nelson enjoys smoking it on a recreational daily basis.
A spokesman for Willie Nelson stated that the singer wants Willie’s Reserve to be “something that’s reflective of his passion.” He would like his brand to be a special type that people who are knowledgeable about quality pot will want to purchase.
Bethenny Frankel of The Real Housewives of New York City has also expressed an interest in having her own line of marijuana. The weight loss expert is the owner of the very profitable Skinny Girl empire.
Frankel reportedly wants to introduce a variety of marijuana that is engineered “to not give you the munchies.” The so-called “munchies” is a side effect of smoking pot that many people more or less enjoy, though for people who are trying to lose weight or maintain their weight, and like to smoke pot, the strain would likely prove to be very profitable.
A spokesman for Willie Nelson’s planned line of cannabis, Willie’s Reserve, speaking with The Daily Beast, said that the “Red Haired Stranger” would not only be wanting to develop and sell hs own strains, but Nelson also plans on selling them through his own dispensaries. Currently, Willie Nelson has plans to have the first such dispensary open in 2016.
Besides his cannabis venture, singer Willie Nelson also has his own biodiesel brand, called BioWillie. The fuel is environmentally friendly and is made from vegetable oil. It is, so far, only sold in Hawaii at select gasoline stations.
Willie Nelson is very active in his support of the legalization of cannabis, and he co-chairs the advisory board of the National Organisation for the Reform of Marijuana Laws, or Norml. Willie Nelson has been arrested quite a few times for possessing marijuana, the last time being in 2010. During that arrest, police in Texas seized 6 ounces of cannabis from Willie Nelson’s tour bus.
Another musical artist who has already marketed a marijuana product that is available from select retailers is Snoop Dogg. The device is a vaporizer pen, designed to let pot smokers use it with marinol oil, which is derived from marijuana and contains THC.
Also, the Bob Marley estate is already in the business, with a brand of cannabis called Marley Natural. Rita Marley, Bob’s wife, is one of the people behind marketing the new brand of weed. According to her, Bob Marley considered cannabis to be “a natural and positive part of life.”
The states that have legalized and/or decriminalized the recreational and medicinal uses of cannabis include California, Washington state, Colorado, Oregon, and Alaska. In Washington, D.C., possessing, growing and smoking small amounts of cannabis have become legalized. Up to ten other states might vote on making the use of marijuana legal in their states in 2016.
The demand for marijuana has grown, and it is likely that other celebrities will eventually market their own brands of cannabis, just like Willie Nelson and Bethany Frankel are considering doing. Willie Nelson’s spokesman, Michael Bowman, is calling Willie Nelson’s approach to marketing his brand of cannabis, Willie’s Reserve, as an “anti-Walmart model.” Some of the likely states where Willie’s Reserve will initially be marketed are Alaska, Colorado, and Washington.
