Noob Question

I just started my first closet grow. My seed just popped up through the soil this morning so got myself a Bayco 10-1/2in Brooder Clamp Light (FL-302PDQ8) but I couldn't find a decent grow light around here. I ended up finding a light in the garage(maybe 60ish watts) that produces 630 lumens. I have that light setup about 14in or so away from the plant.
So I am wondering if this light will be sufficient enough to keep the seedling going for a few days to a week while a try to find another light. Also, do you know if I can use a 250w HPS bulb in this clamp light or not? If not, could recommend a decent 300w grow light?

Well you better get that light closer than that! Like almost touching. I mean like you have to check it every so often because it will grow into the light.
The light you have will work good. Till it outgrows the light. But your along way from that.
And no you cant use a hps 250 in a clamp light. I dont think they even make them with the socket that size?
Just get any 400w HPS light. Is good for you Veg with the T8s and flower with the hps done.

alright, but I don't think I really have the money to spend on a ballast, hood, and a 400w HPS bulb

nm, I just found this http://boards.cannabis.com/indoor-lighting/121311-el-cheapo-guide-lighting.html
Quote:
I thought I'd share this plan for a light that will get you through your first grow, or until you can afford something better. This rig will cover two square feet of grow space.. You may have most of the parts already!
1 Clamp lamp (150 watt or more capacity). $9.98 @ Home dePot. 3 'Y' socket adapters. $2.48 each= $7.44 @ Home dePot. 4 23 to 37 watt, compact fluorescent bulbs. 2 for $9.98 x2 = $19.96 @ Home dePot. Light hanging chain (or other hanging material). $1.49 per foot x6 feet = $8.94 @ Home dePot. 1 Swag hook. $1.69 @ Home dePot. Small Appliance timer (optional). $10.98 @ Home dePot. All items are available at Home dePot, Walmart, Lowes, or almost any hardware store.
First, remove the reflector from the clamp lamp. It is too small for the assembly we are building.
Next, screw one of the 'Y' adapters into the clamp lamp socket.
Now screw the remaining 'Y' adapters into the sockets of the first one.
You should now have four sockets in your clamp lamp.
Adjust the sockets so they are equal distance apart. It's OK if they are slightly loose, as long as they are solidly screwed in.
Screw the four compact fluorescent bulbs into the sockets and hang using swag chain, cable or wire.
DO NOT use the clamp to support the lamp, because we have added too much weight, and the clamp will not hold it.
DO NOT use more than four bulbs in one assembly.
DO NOT use bulbs brighter than 30 watts max.
If you follow these rules, this assembly is very safe, and will not overheat or cause electrical problems. We have tested it extensively.
Four 26 watt bulbs, will give you 6800 lumens! I like to use 'daylight' spectrum bulbs for maximum usable color spectrum. As mentioned above, they are available in multi packs from Home dePot. Whichever bulbs you use will be fine. You don't have to use the special 'grow bulbs'.
I'll post later about building a reflector to fit this assembly. Meanwhile, just hang it about 2 inches above your top leaves, in a corner where two white walls meet.
I have all of this except the bulbs and adapters which I will get tomorrow and since my clamp is good for 300w I can get more lumens than that particular setup.

You should keep the lights about 14-18 inches at first, you really don't want to burn young plants. 4 ft. T5 lights likely cheaper and better than going with CFL and all that messing around. Get the right shop light and add some 5K or 6.5K color T5. And you can get them closer to the plants later with less chance of heat stress.

Dude, you don't even know the exact light he's using. It could be a halogen for all we know. Unless you know for sure that it's a floro, don't give that advice

That could have killed a seedling depending on the type of light

no worries, I made sure it wouldn't get hot. I had it on for a few hours and the bulb was only a little warm. the plant is growing pretty quickly. Good news too, I know someone who will let me barrow an HPS light setup
