Ethanol is preferred because it's a less aggressive solvent. You don't want the plant waxes to dissolve into solvent, you want them to coagulate so you can filter them out of solution. You can use 99% iso, but you will accomplish nearly nothing.

pizza:
When you're winterizing BHO aka absolute grade there's very little difference between trim and bud of the same strain as you're left with a very clean product, almost identical potency. If you're not winterizing the quality difference is due to the contaminants in the leaf. The leaf has a smaller ratio of trichomes vs plant matter compared to the calyxes.

Mex would be out yielded by homegrown and have more stuff to clean up.
Same thing goes for trim, it's about composition. You might have double the contaminants using trim and less cannabinoid concentration but once you clean the product up you're removing contamination thus increasing potency.
It's akin to distillation of alcohol. You can start with a 2 % mash or a 20% mash, less work will be needed to get the 20% up to 95% and the product will be easier to clean starting with the 20% mash (although not always the case). There are virtues of using bud such as higher yield vs solvent used and also with less purification you can retain more flavor as the winterization process removes much of the flavor.
Fact of the matter is, if you remove all the solvent and contaminants from a product it can't be any purer, it can only vary in it's composition. When working with absolute grade, there's not much of a difference.
