Sup, I'm resurrecting this thread.
At the moment I am reading two books:
Écrits en Huronie (Writings in Huronie) by Jean de Brébeuf : This is a missionary who, in the very very beginning of colonization in Québec, went to live with the wendats in their lands called Huronie (maybe huronia in english dunno), it was a very vast area that went from Québec to Lac Huron in Ontario. This book is basically an ethnography of the very early contacts between wendats (who now lives in Wendake, near Québec city) and westerners.
The second book is Regard sur le Bas-Canada (A look on the lower canada) by Alexis de Tocqueville, a philosopher of the enlightenment. This is an analysis of my nation after we lost the war on the plains of abraham, taking over our Independence, at the time we were mostly the rural area of Canada, producers of food more than industries, or anything else. The book is also a kind of ethnography I guess. de Tocqueville also wrote a book called Democracy in America, which is about the political and social structures of USA in its beginning, pretty good read I recommend it.

Just finished Daniel Quinn's "Ishmael."
I'm stuck between starting "Our Mutual Friend" by Charles Dickens or "The Gods Themselves" by Isaac Asimov.

I just started reading "And the hippos boiled in their tanks" by William S. Burroughs and Jack Kerouac. So far its very good, I wasn't expecting more from these two awesome writers.

I remember way back in the day Burroughs did something with Kurt Cobain called "The Priest They Called Him". I have the CD, but honestly still haven't been able to sit thru it, Kurt kinda made it unbearable.lol. What's his stories about? I honestly don't know a whole lot about him.
Lately I have been reading Alhazarad by Donald Tyson. Basically its about the guy who wrote the Necronomicon. Long Story short.

That reminds me of William S. Burroughs role in Drugstore Cowboy, he was "The priest" who was an old junky. I have never heard of his work with Cobain tho, seems pretty interesting.
Burroughs stories are often about drug abuse induced delirium, or simply drug abuse, but teamed up with Kerouac, it kinda feels like i'm reading On the Road or something similar. I'm still at the beginning of this book tho, but its really what it reminds me. I like how Burroughs write, he studied anthropology (which is my field of study as well) and in my opinion it really leaves marks in the way he writes or in the way he will try to analyze different situations. Except maybe for the Naked Lunch, because I've never been able to read more than a couple chapter.
The book is basically the first writings Burroughs and Kerouac wrote together, they were not known at the time and it took a very very long time for it to get published, it was well after they got known for being beatniks.

That's why I didn't look more into him. I remember checking out Naked lunch and kinda being turned off from reading anymore or trying to check out other works. Sounds extremely interesting. I have a hard time staying with the stories with stuff like this sometimes.

I started reading Burroughs with the book Junky, then read The Yage Letters, then tried Naked Luch (I had seen the movie, but the book is absolutely nothing like the movie lol), now im reading this, I'm still not sure if I wanna read queer as I have no doubts he took several pages describing nasty shiats...
So far I enjoy most of his stuff, I read junky in 2 days, I really got into the story like crazy! The yage letters is basically a compilation of letters he and Allan Ginsberg wrote while Burroughs was in south america trying to find ayahuasca, he had trouble finding it (would get shitty ass batches or would get robbed by natives because they thought he was working for a petrol company). Great book I highly recommend it!
I've only read On the Road by Jack Kerouac, I am looking forward to find more of his stuff, he's from Québec by the way, he even started writing on the road in french and the doccuments are in a museum I dunno where.

I'm a few pages from finishing it, it reads like kerouac's on the road - really fast!
The Great Shark Hunt was awesome!! you get a taste of everything that made Hunter so great it was the best of his releases imo.
Have you read the rum diary? That's also very good, I recommend that.
