Has anyone ever heard of Kombucha tea? It's a fermented tea with many health benefits. I saw this video about it and was interested in learning more.
Well, I was getting some more raw milk from my friend down the road and she mentioned this tea. Said she got it from a friend that had been given 6 months to live (cancer). He started drinking this tea and recovered. She asked me if I would like some tea to try and a culture of my own to start my own tea with.
The tea requires either filtered water or distilled. I havent had my filter installed a full week yet and this lil fungus found me
Here is a link with more information for those interested.

My college roommate used to make this stuff.
I used to make the milk version (Kefir). The culture they use is a symbiotic mixture of bacteria and yeast. They are both pretty tasty at the very least, and I've heard both are pretty good for you. Just don't try to make Kefir with Kombucha culture

Eh. I call placebo. Tea is good for you over other liquids.

Placebo can be very helpful for the vast majority of ailments that are mostly in your head. My parents are big into vitamin fads and homeopathic medicines. They swear that all this stuff helps with their "health problems" that western medicine can't seem to diagnose, let alone fix. This is probably because none of these ailments actually exist. A good placebo effect will destroy this kind of stuff pretty effectively, and if it helps a person overcome minor pain or overcome their mentally over-inflated ailments to live a better life, then I'm good with it.
Now for real health problems, I strongly endorse western medicine. Betting all of your chips on the assumption that homeopathic medicine will cure a serious medical condition is too big of a gamble in my opinion.
But yea, that's why on stuff like this I always say "I've heard that this is good for you" because chances are its not any better for you than drinking unsweetened tea or the occasional glass of milk.
Also, controlled fermentation of drinks usually leads to good things

Actually I'm pretty sure the western approach to medicine is what keeps our fat, lazy selves alive after we treat our bodies like garbage for decades.
I'm also pretty sure that the western approach to medicine has eradicated most of the formerly common lethal infections via vaccinations, in fact this has been the case for so long that our retarded society can't remember a time when these pathogens were commonplace, and as a result we are starting to not vaccinate our children based on this lack of experience. This can be likened to the dumb-dumbs that don't believe the holocaust actually happened.
The western approach has also managed to contain and prevent emerging pandemics, so that crazy shit like the influenza pandemic of 1918 doesn't happen again (50-100 million casualties, making it one of the world's deadliest natural disasters in human history, killing more people than both WWI and WWII).

While I'm not sure what you mean by many, I will admit that you have a point here. There will always be unanticipated side effects involved with medicinal practices that actually do something when applied. I also understand that there are crooked people profiting in this field via crooked practices. This is why there are regulatory agencies to monitor and sort these kinds of things out. It is not a perfect system, but billions of lives have been saved, improved, and lengthened thanks to the accomplishments of western medicine.
Homeopathic remedies and practices are thinly regulated at best, usually have no reproducible scientific evidence to support their claims, aside from the strong effects of placebo on overactive minds. These overactive people are also the kind of people who like to do new things just because they are new. This is good and should be encouraged, with the condition that common sense should be maintained and that adequate research should be conducted prior to betting your life and well-being on said new things.

No argument there! A good diet, plenty of exercise, and decent hygiene is the backbone of good health. That being said, major illnesses occur throughout one's life. These can either be left up to chance, in which case we end up with the mortality rates one would expect during Medieval times...or we can treat these illnesses with readily available western medicine, feel shitty for a week tops, and then fully recover to live out the rest of our extended average lifespan (also thanks to western medicine).
I'm not saying alternative medical practice is stupid and should be completely ignored. I just think that if such practices are being used, they should be used in conjunction with western medical practices to ensure that life-threatening illnesses are dealt with properly. Both practices have the potential to fill in the voids that the other leaves behind. This type of thing should be talked about with your doctor, and could possibly help to prevent you from needing western medical intervention as often as most people.
I say go with the Kombucha, it can't hurt...so there is a good possibility it is beneficial in some way or another.

I know!!
Nothings been cured since Polio.
While cancer, high blood pressure, diabetes (and many other illnesses) are all on the rise
Its shameful.
The only thing good about western medicine (maybe) is their surgical abilities. The pharmaceutical efforts have done nothing but poison the population.

I am slightly awkward...but its easy to deal with because I can make fun of my own awkardness.
6'0", 175lb redneck-ish looking with glasses and a few tattoos. I'm out in the garden a lot and hiking in the winter, so not too pasty/sickly looking

lol thanks guys.
Sorry for the thread-jacking niteowl, I watched the video and read your link. It sounds like something I wouldn't mind trying once I get settled into a more permanent residence. I remember really enjoying Kefir, and this sounds like a much lighter, more refreshing fermented drink.
I'd be interested in the difference in taste the longer you let it sit and ferment. It also sounds like the excess culture would make a great compost accelerator. Let us know how it turns out.
