P-O is right, it was the egg. Dinosaurs laid eggs long before chickens even existed. As for which cam first out of the egg, and the first egg laying animal, probably the first egg laying animal. One must remember that even insects lay tiny eggs, and probably did it long before any larger animal. I don't know which would have come first, but tracing it back this far brings up other difficulties such as asexual reproduction. Would the fist animal/bacteria to lay eggs have been derived from asexuality?
