So I am going to be using 6 quarts of PESA for spawn. And some coir, and verm as a substrate.

I've always wanted to have a crack at monotubs but have never been able to find a complete tek that walks you through the whole thing from start to finish. Have you found one? If so, could you point me in the right direction, please?

Its pretty simple and straight forward.
Inoculate some grain, spawn the colonized grain to a coir and verm substrate. Wait for the mycelium to colonize the substrate. Then fruit it.
A monotub us your average clear storage tote with 6, 2 inch holes. 4 about 5 inches from the bottom and 2 near the top. Polyfil is your filter in the holes.
I an sure you could find a tek on the shoomery..
Also here is Large Doses pasteurizing (a substrate) tek that I use. Except I use 2 quarts of verm instead of coffee. I also put a towel in the bucket and then line the bucket with a trash bag. Easily keeps it at 170 for 90 minutes.
Quote:
Figured I'd share how i bulk pasteurize coir You could cook/spawn 10 bricks in a day... easily.
You need to go to Lowe's and get their 3.5 gal buckets and a lid. (These are extremely high quality buckets with easy grip handles i like them because liter and quart measurements are listed in increments all the way up each side of the bucket.)
I used the following recipe per bucket: 4.5 quarts water 1 brick coir 1 quart coffee 1 quart verm It came out to an avg 10 liters per bucket (almost 3 gallons)
Here are the exact steps i take: 1. Heat water up to 170 in PC 2. Throw in coir - let it expand for 5 minutes Keep the lid off 3. Throw in the coffee/verm - mix it all together real good 4. Close lid on PC - set it on high for 5 minutes The substrate will heat up to about 195-200 5. Turn off the stove - remove PC lid 6. Dump substrate into one of the buckets - cover - let cool Repeat steps 1 - 6 for each brick
I put a small hole 1/4'' in the middle of my bucket lid w/ polyfil so it can breathe. The polyfil is overkill, oh well - i like insurance.
With a long-stem thermometer it easily stayed above 175 in all buckets for over an hour, all the buckets cooled in 6-8 hours.

Hey, cheers for that. Sounds fairly simple and straight forward. I'll have to give it a crack sometime soon as it seems a lot more effective than using the BRFC tek.

Never tried a mono. I dove straight into trays and a mini GH. I may give a mono a shot soon too as I sold all my equip but would still like to do a run for personal use.

What do you mean by trays othyem? Care to point me to a thread discussing this technique? I've seen a lot of different methods, but have never heard about trays before, not unless it was for outdoor cultivation.

What method did you use to prepare you bulk sub? And you got trich before introducing to fruiting right?

Has that method worked well for you a few times in the past, I can imagine it getting partially sterilized which would lead to easier contams, I use damion5050's tel which isn't anything near perfect but I have had so far 100% success with about 13 tubs so far since I switched it up from the pillow case tek or filling jars up with field capacity bulk and a meat thermo

If you used the coffee as stated above in that tek, that could be the issue. I always had contam problems with it. When I opted for straight coir my issues went away.

How often do you run across trich and when you dont how many flushes do you get? I ask because I've done the mono a few times and could never get more than one flush from a coir/verm substrate. I just threw the shit in a bucket, threw in adjusted amt of boiling water and cover, wait mix expanded coir and recover. It's been a while and was just wondering on your results. And how big is your PC?

This was the first time in about 5 or so runs that I ran into trich before fruting. Sometimes I would get it at my 3rd or 4th flush. But I usually never run into it because I toss it after the 3rd flush. Because anything after that is not worth it imo and i would rather take my chances burying it and hope to get more in a few months.
I think your problem was not pasteurizing correctly. If you followed Damion5050 tek on the shitery then I would definitely say that you didn't pasteurize correctly. That tek is really bunk and is not a true pasteurizing method.
You want the substrate in the bucket to stay around 175 for an hour to an hour and a half. This is why I line my bucket with a towel and trash bag. The towel acts like insulator keeping it at 175 for will over an hour. (I think I got trich because I did not line it with a towel last time and did forgot to check on it after an hour).
Also I have a 23 qt. presto.

I always used trays of coir in a mini GH. I always got two flushes out of them. I probaly could have got more but production always fell off hard on the third so I just tossed them after two.

Take a look at this post I made on the Shroomery a few years ago.
It's specifically geared towards those looking for an all encompassing guide who are not familiar with the entire process of spawning to bulk. You can make tubs, trays, whatever.
It should be helpful with getting a basic idea of the whole process.
