I've got a friend I'm seeing up in Arcata, and I'm not sure if I should take the Lincoln Hwy route or the I-15. I'll be leaving Christmas morning so I'm not sure if going through Nevada would be riskier because of possible snow? I'm driving a dinky eco car. Anyone here who has traveled either route could shed some light on which way to take?

You'll probably get snow if going through the higher elevations of nevada.
Where are you coming from?

IMO I think you are better off taking the 15 then get on the 10, then take the 5 to Humboldt county.
But if there is heavy snow at the grapevine you will either need chains or they will shut the highway down completely until it is safe again.

Yea that'd work if the 5 went through Humboldt...

Yea well that's a MAJOR gap. You said take the 5 to Humboldt like it's a straight shot. The 36 and the 299 are not to be taken lightly. Be prepared to not see anything or anybody for a long time, especially if you're on it at night.

Expecting that I get my ass out of bed and leave right at 5AM, I should be on 36/299 around 6 and getting there about 8ish PM... But of course that's nonstop driving.
