So check out some pipes I've been making:
First 2 are cocobolo bowls with zebrawood stems:

Nice work, but be careful with cocobolo. It is pretty, but the dust from it and vapors from smoking in it can hurt your lungs. Not trying to be preachy, but I've gotten sick from it.
I love the colors and polished look you can get from it. I just take extra care with dust and ventilation when I hit it with power tools.

Rightly told. The dangers of Cocobolo dust are no joke. From what I have heard within the guitarmaking community, for many exposure is cumulative and can lead to very nasty reactions. One gentleman I know of had full blown life threatening reaction where his throat closed. Some lucky few seem to be able to work with it for years unprotected with no problems, others have reactions their first day working with it.

This is the prototype of some production pieces a friend and I are making. All the wood that we use is reclaimed pieces from their hand saw business. All the scraps from the handle cut out we gather, the ones that suit us we reshape into pipes.
We use a friction fit glass bowl.
This particular wood is curly maple. But we use all sorts. Macassor Ebony, Black Walnut, Bubinga, Pear, all sorts.

I really like the glass bowls on em. the awesomeness of a wood pipe, without having to smoke wood.

So you basically made it so a 14mm glass on glass bowl would fit into the wood part you made? Pretty sweet idea.

Wow. I made this thread and then totally forgot about it
Hawk, I like the glass bowl thing you're doing there. I've been playing with that idea myself. What are your production pieces going for retail? Doing any custom or one-off pieces?
Pricing is difficult. I'm still trying to figure that out. I haven't sold but a few pipes yet.
GaV, that's a very nice looking briar pipe there.
As for working with cocobolo, I have also read about the dangers. However, it doesn't seem to bother me. Really, all rosewoods (dalbergia genus) are fairly toxic. I have been using a couple cocobolo pipes regularly for the past 8 months or so with no ill effects, with one exception: after smoking like 4 bowls in a row out of a new, unseasoned cocobolo pipe I did feel just a tad nauseous. They certainly have a unique flavor until they get broken in, and that alone could bother some people. I find it to be kind of a nice floral taste. Once they are good and seasoned they just taste like pipe-resin. No one that has tried one in my circle of friends has had a negative reaction to them (probably like 15 people so far), but that doesn't mean you won't.
When making them, they usually start on the table saw to cut a rough blank. Then to the band saw for rough shaping or to the lathe it it's a turned stem or bowl or something. The oscillating spindle sander is the go-to tool for the rest of the shaping, or maybe a disk sander. Hand files for detail work then lots of hand sanding. It's seriously like %50-%75 of the time spent on a piece. The holes are usually drilled after the band saw or lathe, but sometimes I drill the square blank first and shape around that. Some pipes were shaped in a moment of inspiration before being drilled but that is difficult and if you fuck that up the whole pipe is ruined. If you drill and then shape it's less likely to go wrong.
The pipes in the first post are all fairly simple, let me upload some pics of the awesome-er ones. I promise to not forget for another month this time

Well each one is different, even though they are "production" pieces. I'm asking around a hundred bucks. Really depends on how intricate I make the piece though. The glass bowl is the only way to go man.

$100 seems about right for that level of workmanship.
Here's 3 pipes that utilize Manzanita stems with East Indian Rosewood bowls.

Oh well, doesn't matter too much, i'm sure. It's a good thread. Maybe it'll inspire more pics.
Nanook, GaV, & hawksapprentice, they are wicked cool. Thanks for sharing. I don't smoke a wooden pipe anymore, but the one i used to smoke from was not near as fancy as those. It was made with a tire valve for the bowl. It was cool while i used it.
