Best alternative to using soil? nned some pro advice!
    #684304 - 09/05/13 08:53 AM (11 years, 4 months ago)

so im getting tired of using plain soil cause its always such a hasle to get the bags of heavy soil to my place.

im looking for s substrate with the following properties:
- readily available & cheap
- needs less transportation then soil bags
- has comparable tolerances towards PH as soil does
- can be used in the same way as soil: will work with my 6.5l pots, will work with my organic nutes and wont need any extra maintenance compared to soil.

the reason i m using soil so far is its ease of use and its tolerance towards over/undernuting and PH. thats what im looking for just with less stuff to carry around and throw out afterwards.

looking forward to your suggestions. remeber ease of use and efficiency!

Yes Coco coir would be the way to go.  But it's not going to be as forgiving as soil.  You will need to be more precise.  But it's really not that hard, just buy a pH and EC or PPM pen and oay attention to what you are doing.

Nothing besides soil, as far as I've seen, is going to be as forgiving as soil.
