I heard that hexane can be use to make hash similar or better than butane, my question is could heptane be use in place of hexane since there so similar? (Not trying to argue which is better) curious about the solvents

Heptane is just another straight chain alkane like butane or hexane. It differs in the number of carbon atoms.
Quote: In many applications (especially pharmaceutical), the use of n-hexane is being phased out due to its long term toxicity, and often replaced by n-heptane, which will not form the toxic metabolite hexane-2,5-dione.
I can't speak directly to this application, just sayin I wouldn't be so quick to discredit using it.

On Heptane: It would have a higher boiling point as well, but I think it still will evaporate off fine.
Impurities: it's a possibility, but it has more to do with the fact it (Hexane) has a higher boiling point. I personally would not do a hexane extraction if I didn't wash the solution.
you may correct me if I'm wrong too, but I think the larger chain you get the more induced-dipole interactions you can get. So getting some of the more polar compounds would become possible.
I don't really know much about the other chemicals within the plant matter that might be extracted.
