Hay smell from almost dried buds

ok so I harvested my La Bella Afrodita autoflower on monday and started drying it in a trash can...I taped strings across the top of the open can to hang the buds then put the lid on with a crack in it and a fan blowing constantly on them.. I checked them this morning and they smelt like hay not like the chocolatey/fruity smell when I harvested, any thoughts?

You shouldn't have a fan blowing directly on them.
They dried too fast.
Bud will lose smell as it dries and regain it as it cures..but in your case you probably did damage the finish product with your drying method. Hanging in a dark room 65-70 degrees with average humidity and a fan circulating air but not blowing directly on the buds is your best bet.

Yeah, curing will help bring that funky smell out. Also, I've found that if you clip them off the stem too soon can affect the smell and flavor. A good long dry with a nice jar cure after will bring out the best flavor. Also, I have never had an auto flower that was delicious. Lowryder was gross tasting and smelling.

Hang the plant upside down after you take off the fan leaves. I found when I clipped and trimmed the buds and put them on a tray they tasted more like grass than the buds I left on the tree and hung upside down until I cut them off with scissors and threw them into a jar.

I never got more than 3/4 of an ounce from the original lowryder. This was in 2003ish when it first became available in the u.s. (at least to me). The new variations may be different, but in my experience, lowryder was not tasty at all and looked just like you described. I quit fucking with it. Just get a quick flowering indica?

Go ahead and jar the buds. Give them a few days and the remaining moisture will likely return to some extent.
Congrats on the harvest.

Keep taking it all out of the jar to crisp backup. Then put it in the jar. Keep doing this and it will get skunkier and funkier. It's like aging wine. It just gets better and better. The gland heads ferment if you will and bring out that funky notes in the reefer. Cheers! TA da!

I say you clipped it too soon, sounds like you just grew it through it's first growth plateau... the buds start growing and get big then seem like they have stopped for a week or so, then it goes through another growth faze that makes the buds dense.... also did you water everyday? cause you should let the dirt get totally dry before watering again (2-3 days at least)

thanks, spent a lot of time with hippy growers in the emerald triangle... I suggested not watering as often because your plant produces more thc to protect itself from dehydration, also letting the grow room dip in temps to 65 degree F at night will induce more thc production IME

Another rookie mistake is not trimming enough. My first maybe 3 harvests I couldn't tell why it always smelled like hay. Turns out I needed to trim more. Just cause there's THC on it doesn't mean it belongs on the bud still.

IMO. 2 most important things. Time drying, and temperature. 1st in my experience the most important thing for drying those flowers, is to get them there in 7/8 days(from harvest). This usually takes a dark place with 2nd a nice unchanging temp of under 75Fand above 60F. IMO these two things regardless of how u trim or when, give ME the best step towards dank NUGGETS! If that's easy keep relative humidity at around 35-40%. After this u must cure correctly. This takes a few weeks to get them top notch smellys! After they're dry, and manicured, store in QtCanning jars I think Kerr is one. Everyday open the lid for a few hrs, make sure the bottom buds rotate down to evenly cure. Caution try not to handle buddsicles you will lose the candy with too much. These aren't the only way, faster drying = harsher greener tasting flower. Light and O2 farther degrade trychs after harvest. Store in cool, dark spot. One Smokeout!

ok i currently have a small tree hanging in my closet but the temp is an issue cause i dont have AC so the temps are in the 80s and the humidity is 60-70%. Someone told me I should never have a fan blowing directly on the tree so what should i do to try to cool it and lower the humidity

I'd say point a fan at the wall and that should disperse the air nice enough, without it blowing directly on the plant...

No fan at all! N less its a large damp area! You need to hang it in a cool dark closet! Cut stems from 12" to 18". It's most important that it drys(snapping stem) in exactly 7-9 days, too short= ruff hot burning hay flav. Too long and you may face mold. It doesn't mater how u cut. If you dry area is more warm, hang the whole plant, if its cool and dry, manicure for jars and dry on screen....IT'S THE TIME U TAKE, MAKE IT TAKE 7 days, whatever u must do.

One thing I've done is string twine across the top of a box and hang your buds in the open box with clothes pins. Point a small fan on low at the box ( at not in ) and give it a few days. You'll have snapping branches in a week tops.

oh ok I just hung my last plant and it dried in four days with a hay smell. I did have the fan blowing into the room but will curing bring back the bud smell or once its gone its lost and will stay smelling like hay? My whole house is always hot so ill just hang the whole plant next time with no fan so it will take a little longer.

You can moisten buds with fruit peel in your jar. I've used apple and dragonfruit before. I plan on trying various fruit types to influence aroma of smoked bud when I have a stable strain to play with.

Moisten ing your buds won't hurt. I'd recommend putting your un manicured buds in glass jars keep em sealed 2 days, it should get soft/moistsen. Then to about normal curing your smell should appear later.

The jar can bring a smell back for sure, the longer it cures the more pronounced your smell can be. 7 days drying gives u the best start but I've had faster drying flowers cure and smell excellent, specially if u can eave it n just do the cure for 2 weeks then it may be super dank stank.
