which hydroponic system to use?
    #664754 - 04/03/13 12:09 PM (11 years, 8 months ago)

I am a first time grower and I was wondering which hydroponic system would be right for me. my grow room to be will be small but big enough to divide in two rooms. Therefore I intend to have two rooms with two separate hydroponic systems.

The original plan was to have a drip system in my vegetative room and an ebb and flow in my flowering room, but then i learned of all the other different hydroponic systems (Ebb and flow or flood, drip system, deep water culture, Nutrient film technique, or aeroponics). I was wondering which one you thought would be best for veg and flowering? which do you recommend? Do I have a good initial plan?

Well you're initial plan isn't really a plan.  It's just deciding you want to grow with hydro, and have a separate veg and flower room.  There's a lot to consider when putting together a grow room.  Air circulation, temperature and humidity levels, co2, etc. etc.

IMO a recirculating DWC system is one of the better ones for a beginner.  You don't have to fuck around with the on off cycles, it's just a plug it in type of system.

Remember that in hydro you are going to need to get a pH pen, a PPM pen, and keep a close eye on parameters on a daily basis.

Thanks for the response. I know I have to be conscience of all those details. I was just trying to keep the question focused on hydroponics. I could inform you of all the technical plans of my grow room but it seems unnecessary because I have done, and will continue to do, mountains of research to ensure I get it right

I have a bit of skepticism with the DWC system though. will the vegetating roots be okay with continuous exposure to water and nutrients even with the air stone?

Well yeah, that's the whole point.  With air being pumped over them constantly they do great.  It's a tried and true method.  But I would definitely recommend a recirculating system with an extra reservoir.  This helps keep the water temps and ph/ppm way more stable.

So what would be your personal recommendation for a hydroponic system in the veg room and one in the flowering room?

For hydro

Wick system: Easiest

Flood and Drain: Tried and true by far the most used method.

Mister system: Very fast growth. Massive pain in the ass.

Deep Water Culture: Looks easy and it is if you keep up with PH and Nutrient levels. In many tests done this method produces the fastest growth of all the hydro systems. I was very surprised (because I'm a flood and drain man to this day) at by just how much it passed the other systems in growth.

Best flood and drain system http://www.hydroponics.net/items/details/multiflow.asp

Best dwc http://www.cch2o.com/under_current.html
