Missouri Bill Would Tax Drug Dealers On Their Sales
JEFFERSON CITY, MO (KMOX) - A bill proposed in the Missouri House would require drug dealers to pay taxes on their drugs.
Democratic Representative Jeff Roorda (D-Barnhart) sponsored the measure and says it would help crack down on drug trafficking. He also says sending drug dealers who are addicted to drugs to jail isn’t the solution.
“I believe that incarceration isn’t our best option as a society when we’re dealing with folks particularly when their crimes are motivated by addiction rather than greed,” Roorda said.
“For those that are battling their demons and have some sort of addiction problem, the idea of taking this money and dumping it into treatment programs I think is a good one and moves Missouri closer to where we want to be as a state.”
Roorda says if dealers are caught without the tax stamp on their drugs, they would have to pay the required tax on top of other charges.
