imo a reliable van would be a ford econoline you can find a late 1990s model for around 800-1500 dollars on craigslist. Just be careful where you park since you could get towed. Bud is now legal in Colorado and Washington so I assume it would be more easier to score there versus other states. If you can go visit California it is beautiful.

These three states are of course on our plan The Ford looks awesome for a roadtrip.. Are there many restareas on the road where overnight parking is allowed?

On main highways (i.e. Interstate 5) you can find a ton of "state" rest stops to stay at. Heres a map of Travel centers of America rest stops. http://www.tatravelcenters.com/find-a-location
As outlook said walmart lets you stay in there parking lot overnight.
Edit: all these places are okay with you staying overnight.
Wal-Mart Stores Kmart Stores Target Stores Sam's Club Stores Costco Stores Meijer Stores Camping Worlds Cracker Barrels Lowes Stores Menards Stores Flying J Truck Stops Loves Travel Stops Pacific Pride Fuel Stops Petro Truck Stops Pilot Travel Centers TA Travel Centers All Truck Stops on one map Rest Areas Weigh Scales

Be VERY careful taking anything into the "bible belt", particularly Idaho. Lately I've been hearing of a lot of people getting busted driving through there. I would also recommend a vehicle that does not have California license plates, as they will pretty much guarantee you getting pulled over in just about any other state. And if you unfortunately do get stopped and searched , don't be afraid to play the "Stupid Tourist" act. Just lay an accent on super thick and say, "Some brown bloke gave it to us. What is it?".

Haveing a Cali lisence plate is not enough to have you stoped by the 5-0. That would be grounds for a federal suit. I know for a fact that is not true also. My father in law lives in SF and drives to the east coast 2 times a year and never has a problem. You sure the info you are stateing as fact is nothing but a lie? I belive it is!I can see someone from CA being stoped and havein a shit ton of PRO POT stickers on the car but to get pulled over for just havein a CA lisence plate is an a out right lie....
and i bet a lot of people on this forum agree

My buddy used to drive with a massive marijauna decal on back of his truck. Until we MADE him take it off....

I have no clue man. Sounds like you may want to do some real research on a subject like that before you travel here with plans like you have.

O.K. So I admit this statement is quite unlikely. And perhaps I should have included, "In my opinion and/or In my experience", seeing as how this statement is just that, an opinion based on personal experience. I can see how most will believe that this can not be true if they, themselves, have never been told, "We don't get much Cal-eye-for-nuns up hea." or "Well, we jus' dent recognize yalls car.". Which is exactly what I have been told on two separate occasions. So, to me, this is quite true. I dont have dreadlocks or any incriminating stickers on my car. Although, I am a "brown bloke" myself and heavily tattooed. Regardless, these where the reasons I was given after being pulled over and not cited. Anyways, Funnyfart, safe travels to you and your mate, both to and fro!

you can rent dodge sprinter or the Mercedes equivalent for dirt ass cheap at most major airports iv been to and they are enormous. they are common builder vans in Europe according a reliable episode of top gear i saw. some have a neat turbo diesel if i remember correctly. don't quote me on that last bit.
if you see California one cool place is Kings Canyon where there's giant sequoias. amazing forest plus some american hospitality in a town on the way

also a friend studied here from Germany and rented with his passport showing his German license, or something like that. either way he rented and bought a bike too without any American certifications. should look into it, but shouldn't have any issues.
