Can i use something like this plugged into a normal 120v outlet to power a 125-200W CFL? I was under the impression a ballast was needed for one of these CFL bulbs.

It looks like you can. I'm not real sure though. You should email the company and ask.

Already on it! what do you know personally from these CFLs? particularly 125W-200W, i just want to use one of these for my own personal plants (1-2) for vegging and then transfer to a 400 or 600W HPS for flowering.
is 125W CFL enough for good growth for 2 plants from seed to end of vegging?

I've never used em in all honesty, as long as it's veg only I'd think it would be just fine

thanks again, im trying to get all my information up to par before jumping into purchasing any items. if im able to get atleast an ounce per plant for the 2 plants, thats more than enough for me to personally enjoy.
i will probably work with a few bagseed ive held onto for starters but i plan on getting some seeds from http://www.castle-marijuana-seeds.com/ from their Mr. Nice Seeds collection and get the G13 x Skunk strain since i hear it yields good and is a good strain for beginner growers. but these seeds i will invest in once i have all the equipment i need to truly treat these seeds well.
any inputs or better strain/seedbank/website suggestions on my above plan would be greatly appreciated!

you can get those sockets with a reflector & 6' cord @ walmart for about $11. Look toward the tool section. They make two sizes, the smaller uses a plastic socket with a slide switch and more prone to heat issues over time. The larger is ceramic with no switch and rated 660w.

Yes you can use these for that. And like the guy above said, use the ones with a ceramic socket.

CFL bulbs are self-ballasted. The large plastic portion at the bottom of the bulb is the ballast.

also, i see the 200W CFL (bloom) and (grow) bulbs...if i wanted to just use 1 bulb for 1-2 plants, should i just go with the bloom bulbs to use for veg and flower as opposed to the grow? or just get both? but if i get both and run them together for 400W, bulbs at $63 each for a total around $130, would i be better off getting an HID if im already paying that much? not worth it due to the amount of plants im growing?

By the way you will spend more on cfls and they put out more heat per watt.
Just spend 70 dollars and get a 200 watt hps/mh combo.

Considering I got a lil' 400W HPS/MH for $120 new-in-box (Guy bought it, never used it.) off of eBay, you'd be much better off getting HID.

Still on first grow, used 115W CFL 6500K for 4 plants, and at the end of veg they all had stalks as big around as a Sharpie, and were way bushier than ever expected from CFL.
Just keep them as close as possible to the plants without actually touching/burning them.

thanks everyone for your inputs. i will use the 125W CFL along with a few 25W CFLS for vegging for 1-4 plants. for flowering i will most likely get a 400W HPS.
could i just use the 125W CFL along with the HPS? the 125W is 6500K for veg, i know we need red light for flowering, but a little blue light wouldnt be a disadvantage would it?

Yes, people often supplement with a little blue light during flowering. I have never really found it necessary though.
