why do my clones take so long?
    #647873 - 11/25/12 10:10 AM (11 years, 11 months ago)

I take my cutting at an angle, I dip it in the gel. I put it on a ph adjusted rockwool block. I mist it when I check on it and always make sure the medium is wet. I keep them under cfl lights, my veg lights.

I'm to the point where my clones work 100% of the time, but it just took my most recent batch 3 weeks to put out enough roots for me to officially consider them done.

this really slows my grow speed potential. I hear people get roots in 8 days and it frustrates me. should I cut the leaf tips? I see some people do that but I don't usually.

what's missing from my equation? some clone faster than others but its always a 2 week minimum.

(I will be trying my first clones in a few weeks.  Good luck)

Hey RasJeph, I usually see roots in less than a week.
Cut and dip in Olivia's, slice up and fork the stem. My rockwool is wet but slight pressure on all sides until it stops dripping. From then on out they stay under the dome and I'll give them a good mist and some fresh air. I check to make sure there is moisture under the cubes, that to me is the perfect water content.
Also I do cut the tips and keep them under 18/6

Well were there maybe temperature differences this time?  Is it a new strain that you're dealing with?  Some take longer than others.

hmmm. maybe heat, or lack of heat. it gets pretty cold at night, but I have trouble with the box holding too much heat.

maybe a heating pad is required?

I cloned these from clones, but like I said I always have a 2 week minimum.

nameinuse, you mean you score up the stem after you dip it? does that help give it more growing spots?

Yeah, I take a scalpel and cut from the bottom up about 1/2" - 3/4" so it looks like a Y
the roots grow from each branch and down from the center.
Another thing is I've noticed that the further my cutting is from the roots (such as topping and cloning) the longer it takes to root.

good lookin out man, I'll try it next time. I only take a few at a time so I won't have any real reliable comparisons.

Try building an aerocloner. for about $40

Sounds like a temperature/humidity problem. I use the aerocloner now and don't mist or use a dome or anything--its all automatic after you put them in. The last batch rooted in 4 days, and the photo in that thread is at day 8. I think the aerocloner works so well is because of the wet/dry cycle it puts the cutting through. Plus the scrape technique tends to have roots exploding out of the damage. Every time I've tried that in soil/soiless/rootplug its rotted.

If your set on using rockwool, you can always start them in the cloner and transfer them when you see bumps developing. Some plants clone much faster than others, even from the same strain.

I have a pump and airstone but it doesn't seem powerful enough. maybe I'll look back into it again.

The aerocloner sprays water onto the stem, then it dries out a little bit, then gets sprayed again.

I'd say stop misting them and let them have continuous fresh air. Unless the humidity is very low, you really don't need to mist. Misting leaches nitrogen out of leaves. If it's semi-closed off the area will hold a higher humidity than normal. Also check your day/night temps. With the aerocloner the pump coming on keeps the water at a fairly stable temperature.

how are you using the pump/air stone? just to raise the humidity? how bout a photo of the whole setup...

I'm not using it at all, I was trying to make a cloner with it but it wasn't powerful enough :P

those are good for increasing the humidity or keeping water oxygenated, but poorly for spraying water on the clones.  those spray tips are 50 cents to a dollar at a hydro store, and pumps are pretty cheap. You could rig one sprayer to the top of a cheap pump and it would work.

i recently started using rapid rooters in place of my bubble cloner.
they were really slow to put out roots.
so i got a heating pad, and they started throwing out roots like crazy.
made a world of difference.
