NBA Thread 2012-2013
    #646279 - 11/16/12 08:37 PM (12 years, 1 month ago)

Knicks are playing against the Grizzlies right now. Great game so far.

Knicks are still unbeaten. The only remaining unbeaten team in the NBA. And they have been doing this all without Amare in the lineup.

Amare doent play defense anyways, so maybe him being out is a good thing for the Knicks in the long run.

On the other side of this matchup, Memphis, has looked playoff caliber in November. I have always liked Memphis' team with the bigs of Gasol and Randolph who between the 2 of them have a larger skill set than just about any other 4-5 combo in the NBA. The only better tandem is Gasol and Howard, but they havent quite gel'd yet. Come playoff time, watch out. They will be scary good.

Some of the other early highlights in the NBA;
Brooklyn Nets are 5-2 in their first season in Brooklyn, passing on Howard hasnt looked like it matters so far with Lopez really stepping up
Miami Heat are 7-3
LA Clippers are 6-2
Memphis off to a 6-1 start
Spurs are 7-2

Some of the early surprises:
Charlotte Bobcats are 4-3 after winning only 7 games all of last season
Pistons have looked awful and are 1-9
Washington is the only NBA team without a win and are 0-7
Portland off to a slow start at 3-5
Lakers are 3-5, D'Antoni gets his first game tonight at home against the Suns (4-5)
New Orleans Hornets are 3-5 after winning the NBA draft lottery last season. Anthony Davis still has much much development to do in order to live up to that #1 pick hype. I think Charlotte got the better player with Kidd-Gilchrist (at least at this stage in their careers, Davis has more upside but has to develop first)

GO CAVS! :smirk:

The heat should be unbeatable. I don't watch much until playoffs but I would like to see Memphis make it.

Memphis make the playoffs? I think that is a given as long as they can keep their players healthy. Randolph and Gasol are beasts.

Miami really isnt as good as what everyone thinks. Especially since they cant even keep Wade healthy. Last year LeBron put the team on his shoulders but they really need to develop their bench. IF they dont win another NBA title, it will be because of their lack of depth. Bringing in Ray Allen was a great move by Miami. A punk move by Allen though. Cant believe he left Boston to sell out and become LeBrons bitch.

Id love to see the Celtics beat Miami in the ECF's. Boston did a good job drafting and bringing in talent to help fill the void that Ray Allen left.  I cant wait to see the kind of player that JJ Sullinger becomes

They have an all-star lineup from what I know about basketball.  Not necessarily unbeatable but Should be in the running without question.

Definitely. Being defending Champions, I would have to say they are the favorite to win it again this year. Not many people would argue that

Week 3, 11/19/2012

New York basketball at an all time high right now Knick's are 7-1 and Nets are 6-2. Nets have been especially impressive

Miami Heat, as expected, off to a hot start (no pun intended) at 8-3

The Charlotte Bobcats, as I called on the Boomery, are this years most improved team already, 5-4 after winning only 6 or 7 games all of last season. Jordan did a great job drafting in bringing in Kidd-Gilchrist, the most NBA-ready player of the entire draft class

Washington Wizards, still havent won a game and sit at 0-9, looking to be a lock for a lottery pick already.

Oklahoma City is 8-3 but not nearly as impressive or as good as they were last season when they had James Harden

LAC are 8-3 and are only going to get better when they get Mr. Big Shot Chauncy Billups back

My other pick for "most improved team," are making me look good so far this season, Golden State is 6-5 and in 2nd place in the Pacific

Lakers are improving after a 1-5 start, now at 5-5 and only going to get better imo. I think they win the NBA finals this year despite Miami being the contenders

Memphis, maybe the best team RIGHT NOW is 8-2, and have looked unbeatable at times

Following Memphis is San Antonio at 8-3

Teams to watch from the bubble:
6'ers 6-4
Boston 6-5
Milwaukee 6-3
Dallas 6-6
Minnesota 5-4

Season is early yet, we'll revisit this closer to Christmas

Sad my team doesnt even get talked about in my own thread. They had a worthless team in the rebuilding process then our best player, Kyrie Irving, does something to his hand and will miss the next month. Looks like we'll be getting a lottery pick for the 3rd consecutive season

Yeah, they certainly came crashing pretty quick. Jermey Lin is a joke. They only got him for marketing. They need someone who can actually ball playing beside James Harden. But even Harden's FG percentages have been pretty lame.

Cavs are even worse so I feel your pain. Kyrie Irving is out for the next month

Lakers in a dogfight at home against the Nets. Up by 3 at the end of the 3rd quarter in D'Antoni's first official game as Lakers head coach. Boy he is going to get roasted if they lose tonight

Knicks are playing scary good. their roster is stacked this year and Felton is a way better PG than Lin.

Both the New York teams have been very good this year. Knicks are 9-3 and Nets are 8-4 and they are 1st and 2nd place. And I couldnt agree with you more about J. Felton was even a stud in Charlotte they just wanted more picks.

Paw- Did you follow the NBA thread over on Shroomery? The 2 teams I picked to be the "big surprises," of this year have actually delivered. I picked Charlotte, who at 7-5 (3rd in the division), already have the same number of wins as they did in 2011, their next game is against Oklahoma City so that will be interesting. Then the 2nd team I picked, was Golden State. Golden State is 8-6 (2nd place) and they have a roster that I really like.

Golden State Depth Chart:
PG- Stephen Curry and Jarrett Jack. Jack is a very solid backup. Remember watching him in college at I believe Georgia Tech and as a Pacer.
SG- Klay Thompson and Brandon Rush. Thompson is having a sick season and has to be in the Top 5 for Rookie of the Year. Great draft pick by GS
SF- Harrison Barnes and Richard Jefferson. Harrison Barnes has what seems limitless potential as a rookie and Jefferson is a veteran who has proven his value on Offense and Defense
PF- David Lee, Carl Landry, and Draymond Green. Part of the reason I loved G_S so much going into the season was their size and skill at the 4,5 spots. All 3 of their PF's are servicable big men with solid fundamentals. Draymond Green out of MSU is only going to keep developing.
C- Festus Ezeli, Andrew Bogut, and Andris Bedriens. The later 2 are proven NBA Centers who can score and crash the boards with the best in the league. Ezeli is a 7 foot rookie (cant think where he played college now) who is going to be sick once he refines his offensive game and gets some more post moves.

In a nutshell they have a roster full of starters who are all 1st or 2nd year players being backed up at every position by legitimate veteran players.

I wont change my prediction of either Charlotte or Golden State making the playoffs. Not yet at least. But if I had to pick one, I would have to think Golden State has the best chance, but the West is sooo fucking tough these days.

Oh and Paw, Fuck the Rockets

Your Rockets fucked up by signing Lin. He is a publicity stunt to try and draw the Chinese market like Yao Ming did and they drastically overpaid for him. That move is what has blown your teams chances to be good this year. They need a legitimate PG to play along side James Harden. Harden is essentially having to play PG and Lin is average 6 assists per game. That is not acceptable from a starting PG these days.

Lin is shooting 35% from the field, 24% from 3-point

Other than Lin, they really struck gold getting Omar Asik from Boston (im pretty sure it was Boston). And both Chandler Parsons and Patrick Peterson have been studs this year. I thought them allowing Scola to leave was awful, but Peterson has been every bit as good as Scola was/is.

The only way the Rockets are going to be competitive is when they lose Lin at the PG. At least as a starter. I think he would make a mediocre backup. Shame they dont let De'Quan Cook run the PG like he did at Ohio State. Their lack of depth at the Guard position really handcuffs them. They need to get into the Free Agent market quickly. I hear Michael Finley wants to come back and play. Houston sounds like a good fit for him if he is willing to play for a team not really in contention.

Wow, I need to stop rambling.

Holy shit, I didnt realize he was on a max contract too

He's def not worth the 8.3 million he's getting paid, but he's more worth it than Jeremy Lin.

2 horrible deals for Houston. Their owner and GM sucks

Asik is at least averaging a double-double

Knicks play at Nets tonight. That should be a heck of a game to watch

I am hoping Charlotte upsets the Thunder. Thunder have taken a major step backwards by letting Harden get away and trying to replace him with Kevin Martin. Harden might have been their best on-ball defender too. No way do the Thunder make it back to the NBA Finals

Thunder have a chance as long as Maynor stays healthy (he's the only pass-first PG they have) and Ibaka keeps hitting his jumpers. They had to let Harden go. The Thunder had to choose between him or Ibaka and considering the their biggest weakness is interior defense and rebounding I'd rather keep Ibaka.

Harden is one of my favorite players, though. He's like a hybrid of Manu Ginobili and pre-injury Gilbert Arenas.
