Aero Cloning System

This page describes an Aero Cloning System.
It states:
Quote:
The top of the container must have holes cut in it to allow the stems to enter. The holes should be at least 1/2" in diameter.
What keeps the clones from moving further into the hole? I mean, the depths that they reach into the box are pretty specific; they need to end up just over the surface ("about an inch below the stem") and this might be hard to control if one is just setting the cutting into a 1/2" hole?
I am thinking that this is just my ignorance, and that using some sort of starter plug:
is implied in that article. (or was just missed by me)
Take care,
JD

You use little rubber plugs that the stem goes through.

I wouldn't even try to work with a hole that small. Mainly because the roots would most likely get fucked up removing them. I use 2 inch net pots with the bottom of the pot removed, and standard 2 inch net pot collar to hold the clone. This thread may be helpful to your research. http://www.growery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/249470#249470

Thank you both.

I had no idea that such a thing existed....but this was what I was wondering.

aerocloners are easy to build, here's mine.
I took a 12" saucer that sits in a 5 gallon bucket while not letting any water out the sides, cut 2" wide holes all over it and put 2" netpots with the bottoms cut off. The 2" foam collars hold the plants. They have a T cut out of them and open up like packman. You can put more than 1 plant per collar, I've done three in one with no problem, just cant let the roots grow too tangled.
A small 250gpm pump connected to standard PVC pipe with a barbed T screwed on to it with a flexible tube making a circle. Drilled holes into for the sprayers with self-tap like threads. Then put that on a timer that can do 15 minute intervals-- 15 on, 30 off. I have more sprayers than needed and the loop tends to droop down, so I tied a piece of fishing line to the bucket into a loop that it rests in.
For cloning I bought a 100 pack of x-acto blades and use a fresh one every time (cleaned with alcohol to remove storage oil) take the blade directly to the stem but don't cut into it, drag it down the stem to skim off a thin layer of skin, do that 2-3 times around and make sure there is no extra/loose cells hanging onto the stem. Then in a shallow plate of water, I cut the stem at 45º. This works well with just plain tap water, but you can add a product with IBA (rooting hormone) to speed things up a bit. I read that superthrive had IBA (and b vitamins) so I put half of a capful in the last few times and its been amazing. No bother dipping the clones, they are going to be sprayed the whole time. Turn it on as you load it, and what I do is cut all the branches I want to clone and let them sit in a bucket of water first.
