Cannabis Training question

hey i was just reading http://www.growery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/239247#239247
and had a few questions on training. Now i never grown before but trying to do my research. From what i gathered from that post with training that controlls how the plants grow buy blocking the top of the plant from getting light right? And that makes the plant grow more buds? or is it branches?
Now doing this training is there a certin point in the growth of the plant u have to wait for to do it?
Also do u have to do this while growing? or can i just let the plant grow stright up
does this make a big differnce in yeild?

You have it right more or less. It forces the plant to produce more branches, therefore more bud sites, and more main colas.
No, you do not have to do it. Depending on the strain, doing this can increase yields. Some strains don't like it at all though. So ya have to experiment a bit. Of course you can let it grow normally.

so if i did do it would it make a huge enoff diff in yeild to make it worth the time that has to be put into to do it?
as for the part that some strains dont like it,how do i know wich strains to do it to, and not do it to?

Well some breeders will tell you if there strains do well with it or not. So youhave to get a strain that they tell you if that strain does well with it, or experiment like the rest of us.
And it can make a big enough difference. I have a strain that doubles in yield.
