I have a small grow in my apartment. I decided against a filter and fan. Even then you still need to find a place to port it out. In an apartment, that's far more attention grabbing than a faint smell. Most states require your landlord give a notice before entry into your apartment, and you can refuse them entry if they do not. I also noticed that something as simple as a incense or air spray. Keep the room closed most of the time. I don't think that light will create much heat, monitor it. Crack the door when you're home. Really that simple for me. Got a decent harvest using this method :P
Really though you just need to weigh your options.
do you have a good idea on what you want to spend for boxes?
There is some killer grow tents out there but their a bit too expensive for my blood.

You don't have to port it out of your place. All you have to do is have it recirculating the air inside your grow cab.

i remembver a form of this from overgrow but i was too lazy to retype it.. basically something like this...this is from a member at grasscity..
mine would look diff but you get the idea..
[quote Perfect Odour Neutralizer
Well, thanks to 4free, my grow closet room is now odor free! Even the chemical smell of the hydro nutes is gone.
Anyway, here is a step-by-step tutorial showing what I did.
You will need:
1. A five gallon bucket 2. A "muffin" fan, or a round fan of some sort that has the motor built into the compact frame of the fan. (See pics and you will understand.) 3. A drill 4. A one pound container of Soil Moist, which is a water absorbing crystal. You can find it at almost all nurseries and gorw shops. 5. ONA, or Odor Neutralizing Agent. YOu can get it at most grow shops or "baby" shops for new mommies. 6. A 5 gallong bucket lid, which may be optional. budnoob, Stratos a]

I have done it with a 150W HID system. Three autos in a cabin 120x40x90cm. The smell got quite noticeable with flowering as the exhaust went directly to my living area. But let's say if you are living on an entire third story for example where people can't smell it from the streets and you have an extra room for growing, OR you have an extra room with connection to the chimney smell shouldn't be a problem at all.
As for temperature, in winter it was not noticeable but in summer, if you are living in that room, the few degrees difference will be a little hotter then the rest of the house, but not a problem in term of infrared spotting because the same thing can come from a Computer or Xbox with Screen when run all day long.
On the other hand an inline fan with carbon filter is available as a set for such small prices as 140Euros and If you are not short on the money I'd suggest you get one for convenience.
With the grow boxes again I'd say if you can afford it, it's nice to have because the foil on the insight has great reflection properties, but you can also modify a locker and staple in some of these. Clearly if you're growing in a room where there could be some critical repairs to do by the landlord or some craftsmen, you would be more insuspicious with a locker, but then you have to get the light leaks fixed and build in a RPM regulator to cut out the noise as they come in.

Well it's not that mini at all, I think I could double the space when I look at the cbm...
It's in my country (main europe) but I would be surprised if there is no grow shop with similar specials in your country... Link is here: http://www.growland-hydroponics.com/Grow-Exhaust-Fan-Sets I have bought the set for 109,95 Euros but I ordered an RPM-controller for 32 Euros, so 142... The set with 180cbm per hour. Sorry, I mixed up... It's only 10", Hawk always says the 12" is better which I can understand if you wanted to expand later, plus you can still regulate the RPM with a controller...
There was a rule of thumb for reckoning the strength of the fan. Like the exhaust fan should be able to exchange the air in the whole grow space within a few minutes or something (Source: The Ultimate Grow, Jorge Cervantes).

You can make a carbon filter with a jar of activated charcoal. Its in the in fish food area, you can get it for $5.
Put in a sack or something with an inline fan.
Anyway you can push air through it, works awesome for a few months.

With the inline fan you force air through carbon.
