You can get a 30x loop on ebay for less than $4, straight from hong kong, takes about a week or two. But amber tricromes have a way of shining/sparkling that they tend to stand out without a loop. It takes a loop to find that out, but after you realize how they shine you can see them unassisted. look for the one's that 'glow' in the light.
I gauge the plants by how the buds are looking. Are they filling out or still fluff? budding happens at the end of the flower period, where the plant bulks up and takes shape. Prior to that it's mostly just putting in structure. I Look at the very tip of the flower, does it just have a bunch of hairs going into a small area, or are those hairs being consumed by plant material that's swelling out? If the tip still looks premature then they get more time. Tricome color usually coincides with this sort of system.
Since your outdoor I would push it a few more days until it's almost freezing at night. It looks like you would be fine harvesting soon, but it also looks like if you went a few more days those buds would bulk out more. Plus you probably haven't been in flower period since June, as its got the longest days of the year.
