as i browse the site i see alot of the same posts all the time. just thought i'd make a list of things to consider BEFORE starting a grow for the first time.
#1. KNOW WHAT YOU'RE WORKING WITH ( what can you spend) this can be done on a shoestring budget, but know what you need. if needed make a budget find the local hydro shop, or grow supply and do some pricing.
#2 KNOW YOUR SPACE where are you going to grow? research grow room design: it doesn't have to be PRO, but know what you'll be dealing with. setup/dry run: setup your new room and run it for a week. if conditions aren't up-to-par, adjust and run it again. know if your space is light-tight. light leaks during flower will cause headaches.
#3 KNOW YOUR SYSTEM (AS PH WILL VARY SLIGHTLY) you gonna run soil: buy a quality soil, there are plenty to chose from. (fox farms ocean forrest, fox farms happy frog, pro-mix, sunshine mix and humboldt mix are just a few) or make your own.
when i grow in soil a PH of 6.0-6.4 works best FOR ME.
gonna go hydro? ebb/flow ( flood/drain) DWC (deep water culture) top feed aeroponics again, it goes back to know your system. many hyrdo systems can easily me made at home. when i grow hydro a PH of 5.6-6.0 works best FOR ME
#4 KNOW YOUR WATER ( IMPORTANT SHIT)
tap water: tends to be HARD (ppm above 200) most municipal water supplies are chlorinated, and contain fluoride.( stuff our babies really don't need) you have the right to request a free water sample analysis, and they'll tell you just what's in your water. if you gotta use it, it's best to let it sit for a week. well water: most rural communities offer a water sample analysis free of charge. well water can be high in sulfur and iron. distilled water: can be bought at any grocery store. requires the use of a cal-mag(calcium/ magnesium supplement) filtered water: you can buy a decent under-sink model for 60-80$ that will remove a good portion of the chlorine and dissolved solids. requires the use of a cal-mag supplement.
R.O. filtered water (reverse osmosis): what i like to use! initial filter cost is steep ( but my water from the filter is like 12 PPM) requires the use of a cal-mag supplement. no chlorine or fluoride salts to build up in your soil/roots
PH and PPM/EC; get the necessary tools to test for ph and PPM/EC ph can be tested using a cheap liquid drop kit or with a digital ph pen. ph pens require proper storage and calibration. ppm/ec is measured with a digital pen, and helpful when figuring the strength of your nutrient solution.
#5 KNOW YOUR NUTES
you can use cat poop, banana peels and aquarium water, but don't expect much! buying a quality nutrient program IS ESSENTIAL! there are way too may out there to even attempt to list. but any program from general hydroponics, fox farms, botanicare, grotek or others will do. ( just go to the local hydro-hut, they don't sell miracle-gro) remember that deficiencies are usually the result of poor PH. read all labels thoroughly, and mix accordingly!
now i know that there are alot of things i left out, but to me these are the most important things to consider ( AND KNOW) BEFORE YOU GROW!
please feel free to add, and i hope that this may help anyone looking to start a grow!
