CFL throughout the entire grow

Im getting ready to attempt my first grow and I would like to keep things as cheap and simple as possible. After some reading and video watching Im a bit confused if using a CFL light through the entire growing process is worth it. I think it will work but the results will be sub par, which Im ok with, this is a learning process. Of course I do want the best results possible though. I guess my question is: Is growing with a CFL throughout the entire grow worth it?

That's a objective question dude. What the person wants from it, is going to determine whether it's worth it or not.
And from what I can discern from what you wrote. I think you would be happy with the results of a CFL grow.

If you plan on using CFL for veg someday, and upgrading your flowering light to a HID light, I'd say totally and 100% go for it.
I've seen people do some awesome things with CFL. I've grown autos under CFL and had very good results.
Since (like you said) starting out is a learning process, it'll allow you to get comfortable with the grow cycle without breaking the bank. Since CFL runs a lot cooler, you'll also be able to run it without a completely dedicated room (also cutting down on cost). Someday, when you're ready to step it up, you'll have CFLs leftover as veg lights (which work perfectly well!). And, you'll probably get some nice smoke to boot.
When it comes down to it, I'd suggest focusing your money on getting some good nutrients and a good growing medium. The nutrients will last you for many grows in the future.
Good luck!
-------------------- Of course it's happening inside your head.
Why should that mean it isn't real?

Is vegetative growth using exclusively a MH light and flowering using exclusively HPS a good idea? I know these are stupid basic questions but... I saw a pretty good deal on a mh/hps light but it can only use one bulb at a time and if I can get better I might as well.

Well considering that's the standard way to do it. Yeah it's a good idea. But you can use HPS all the way through.

Mmmmm, theres really no such thing as a single CFL bulb grow. Unless you're thinking of getting one of those big fuckers, and then for that price you could just get a HID light.

Well, I said fuck it and pulled the trigger on a 400w light that comes with both bulbs for ~120. Not the best quality but the reviews were good.

Do you mean different intensity of light at the different stages of growth?

You do not need different watts. They can all be the same.
Shifty, no that's not what he meant.

I am doing my first CFL grow right now and I am very pleased with my results. I had 280 watts (comparable to about 600 watts) for veg, and upped it to about 330 (700 comparable watts) for flowering. 6500k for veg and 2700k for flower. I am a huge fan of CFL's now. as long as you have enough light for the plants, they seem to really like it.
heres my grow: http://www.growery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/612565
good luck bro
