curling leaves on top of plants
    #619459 - 04/20/12 09:19 PM (12 years, 7 months ago)

Hello

We have 11, 2 week old plants. They started from seeds with a mixture of sunlight and a 20w flourscent light. We now have them under a 600w Metal Halide light for the last three days. they have been perfectly healthy as seedlings and for the first two under the new light.

We are using Miracle Grow Potting soil with a little worm casings, and they are on in 3 gallon pots. The temp usually runs right around 74-83 and the humitiy is 30-40 we are trying to raise that number.

There is only three that are having this problem. 2 of which are curling only and the third has brown going through the veins of one of the newest grows. I'm not sure what the problem is but have provided a picture to help you see what I see.

I appreciate all the help you could provide to a first time grower.

6. How often do you water and what type of water do you use?
7. What is the pH of your water?
8. What kind of fertilizer do you use and what is its NPK ratio?
9. Do you foliar feed or spray your plants with anything?
10. What kind of lights do you use and how many watts combined? (HPS, MH, fluorescent, halogen, incandescent "plant lights")
11. How close are your lights to the plants?
12. What size is your grow space in square feet?
13. What is the temperature and humidity in your grow space?

Well for one, you're overwatering.  This seedling isn't taking shit for water at the moment.  You are going to compound this problem if you keep up the watering schedule you are on.

I would guess the problem you're seeing is due to either a soil pH that's off or your soil is too hot.  Although it seems an odd coincidence that it happened right after you transferred to the MH.

Get back to me with the soil pH.

I will reduce the watering for sure. And I am going out tomorrow to get something to test the ph of the soil.

Do you have any suggestions on when to water and how much?

When to water is something that's a bit of a learning curve.

I do it by feeling the weight of the pot directly after watering.  Then lift it about twice a week and see what the difference is.  Wait until it's VERY dry, feel the weight, water, and then feel the weight again.  You want your soil to get pretty damn dry in between watering.  This allows air to be drawn down into the root system, which is necessary.

So I would wait probably a couple of weeks without watering that guy.  He's tiny and in 3 gallons of soil.  That should be plenty to sustain it for that long.

What is the cheapest way to test the ph of your soil? I've been getting a lot of mixed views on what to get. Can you just get a vial and some ph indicator or do you suggest something else?

I bought a burpee soil test kit from Walmart, it has a test for ph and npk

Soil ph is alkaline looks about 8.0 accordIng to the color chart
N=Low
P=very low
K=medium

There's your problem right there.  You need to flush with at least 12 gallons of water that has a pH of about 5.

So should I do that to all my plants or just the affected plants? How do you flush exactly?

You pH balance each gallon of water to 5, and make sure to get 12 gallons through.  You should check each plants soil to make sure that none of the others are off.  Any that are, I would flush.

I just spent like 4 dollars on a soil test kit and it called to take soil from each pot and mix them together so that is basically all my plants. So basically your saying I need 132 gallons of 5 ph water to save these plants.

Yup, You have a tap right?  And hopefully you bought a pH test kit before you started growing.  And lemon juice or some other acid can adjust your pH down.

Is it really worth it at this point to salvage them or is it more productive to start over with new soil from scratch?

Of course it's worth it to salvage them.  Why wouldn't it be?

Okay then what do you recommend for a ph tester? And just lemon juice to bring it down? Or are there better things?

I know I'm sounding like a complete noob, but they seemed so healthy until the last two days and it's kinda a bummer to see something that you thought was going great start to die

I have 6 in 3 gallon pots and I have 5 in 1 gallons. So do I still run 12 gallons through the one gallons?

The rule of thumb is 4:1 water/soil ratio for flushing.

How much money do you have to spend?  This is what I would get.

Okay I could see getting the regulator stuff obviously, but I don't get paid until wednesday so if we got the regulator and a cheap ph indicator, like for pools and aquariums and stuff for the mean time and then got a more advanced ph tester later would that be enough to get the job done until I could afford the other tester?
