ventilation mystery
    #617522 - 04/10/12 09:56 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

been awhile since my last post. But I have a 4x4x6.5' tent, with a 1000w HPS in a sealed air cooled hood (complete with glass and gaskets). There's a 325CFM inline fan pulling air from the room (small 10x7' room in corner of basement.) which never goes above 70 really (perhaps the summer will bring worse temps but I doubt it, I'm pretty far north..) and blows it into the hood and then out the other side of the tent, through about 5 feet of 6" ducting and out through a small basement window that comes out under my back deck/porch. Next I have a small carbon filter attached into one upper corner of the tent, ducted to a 170CFM inline fan that's outside the tent (pulls through the filter) and exhausts that air through the small window also. Passive air intake on the bottom vent in the opposite corner of the filter (vent hole just left open/untied). i also have a couple 4" desk fans in there, maybe i need bigger ones?

Natural air currents bring cool air from under a 2" gap under the door from the basement (56 degrees F or so this time of year). My concern is my temps seem to hover between 80 and 84 and never get down to that 75F I hear is sooo desirable. There are no real plants in the top-feed DWC system built inside yet, trying to get the temps stable first. I don't think it has much to do with where i'm getting my cool air from, whether i close the door to the room or not the temps stay the same. Are these temps ok as long as I have fans also blowing around? should I change anything to try and improve removing the massive amount of heat that this 1000w puts out. I really hate screwing around with ducting and it seems to be all I'm doing lately =/

The temps are fine.  My room tends to stay around 80-84.  And I get great pot and great yields.

Now if you're set on getting the temps down just get a small window ac and duct the air into your room.

Otherwise I think that

Otherwise I think that if you want to get the temps down with out getting an AC, then you would want to get another carbon filter and make it so that the fan for your hood and have it pulling air out of the room as well.    Damn, that was a run-on sentence.

Thanks for the reply h.a. I think I'll just let 'er rip in the lower 80s and see what happens. All this talk about 75 degrees being ideal for photosynthesis may be true but I think it's splitting hairs after awhile. as long as your not dangerously high or low your yield and growth rate probably don't change a WHOLE LOT (not saying that they don't change.)

What is a good temp range for the reservoir? if the room stays at about 70F I can only believe that after a few hours of operations the res would eventually warm up to room temperature, maybe a few degrees less due to circulation. so maybe like 68F? is that about on spot?

Well what your reservoir sits at should be around 65-70.  What the temperature holds at is going to be dependent on how large your reservoir is and the temps of your room.

six 5 gallon buckets connected to a 20 gallon res. I think it'll work out ok. Hell, I can put the back of my hand on the glass right under the bulb and hold it there all day long... that's gotta be good right?

One more quick question, about how big should the plants be before I put them in the topfeed dwc system??? I've got 6 that have been in 6" rock wool cubes (more like blocks..) for about a week now and seem to be doing well. They are all at least 4" tall and have their first set of true leaves (the single fingered ones, not full fans) and are pushing out their 2nd set, one in particular is on it's 3rd.

I wanna get em in the system (they'd be about 4' under the 1000w HPS) and grow em up quick so I can clone and sex. I'll pull the males and just grow whats left. right before 12/12 I'll pull 6 or 8 new clones total from the remaining female plants to get started for next cycle so I can have all 6 sites with female plants. this first run will be kind of a test run.

sound good?

As long as there are roots popping out of the rockwool you can throw em in your DWC.

:lolsy:

That really depends on you strain man.  Some strains can thrive in the 90's, it all depends on where the genetics originated in.  I've grown great pot with great yields in 95-100 degree rooms.  But some plants will stress with high temps, you just have to try it out to see if you have one that will be able to work at that high of a temp.

Grown at 95 degrees.

Just depends on where the genetics came from.  Some cannabis evolved in hotter more jungle like climates with high humidity and high temps.

But as I said this all depends on strain.  If you can keep your temps in the 70's I would do that.

Yeah lol I can't... but great news  I really noticed her taking off since I use the MH, even if I'm in the nineties.
