My desktop keeps shutting down on it's own. It's like someone just unplugs it kinda shut down. I reset it back to original and it didn't help. Anyone have an idea on how to fix it?

It could just be over heating. That or maybe your power source is going bad? But I think that would just quit all of a sudden and not act like it is now. Hopefully someone with more experience can help ya.

I was thinking over heating at first as well. But sometimes it last for hours, and others times I can't even get online. I'm going to pick up a stand by tower I have, and see if I can fix or get it fixed. Maybe I could rebuild this one. I know someone out there could help me out.

How old is it? Does it have air space around it? Were you using it for a long period of time or doing something that expends lots of resources? I hope for your sake its heat or software.
Step one: dont use it again for anything before you backup any important data off of it.
step 2-13125646 (trouble shoot):
Pop it open and do a check for loose parts and clean out dust. Use compressed air on the heat sinks, or a vacuum with a hose if you must. Don't touch stuff, just use your eyes and air to clean it. Make sure the fans are working after you're done cleaning (especially ones mounted to graphics cards or the CPU. Put your hand near the ram and see if it seems hot.
if you are using windows there are some on board diagnostic option you can find in the control panel, run some windows trouble shooters.
Get a restore disk, or create one (windows), or alternatively prepare to format and install a new operating system.
Download CPUID and check the temperatures, anything over 60 deg C is suspect.
report back.

It sounds like your power supply is on its' way out.
I'd recommend replacing it with an Antec, Corsair, or Seasonic PSU.
Don't skimp on your PSU, a faulty PSU can take one of your components with it when it fails.

I would doubt it's overheating if your desktop has been working well for a long period of time before it starting acting up.
It may very well be overheating, though.
Open the case and see if it's dusty in there.
If you have a blanket of dust on your components overheating may be the culprit.
You say you can't get online sometimes? By that do you mean that your PC is up and running and just won't connect to the internet?
That makes me think your ethernet port may be going which means your board may be going... And that's no good. (Assuming that it's not a driver or malware issue)
If it was my PC my first step would be to replace the PSU and used some canned air to clean the thing out.

Age four year old. Has good air space all the way around it. The most I do is surf three or four forums at a time, a little iming, and may download a movie a now and then. I have rebooked it, will do internal cleaning tomorrow. Right now I'm hearing a sound like a bad dvd,cd makes in a player. I'll check back after cleaning and see where that gets me.

No by that I meant it will shut down that quick sometimes. Earlier today I made one post, and it shut down. I got it running a gain and was online for 15 minutes and down again. I've been online for the last five hours and haven't had an issue.

Sounds like it's your PSU, d00d.
That, or it's your HDD.
Does what you're hearing sound like a clicking sound?
Nonetheless, I'd bet money you need a PSU replacement.
What is the brand and model of your computer?

Not so much of a clicking sound, more like a dragging sound. It's a gateway, I don't have a reader here so I can't read the model number. Cleaning has been done, now seeing if that helped. There was a bit of dust, not as much I figured I'd find. That was the first time the case had been off since I got it.

Have you ever re-installed the operating system on it? If not its time to! I format and re install every 6 months, its good maintenance and teaches you to use a good backup system.
Anyway the easiest thing to do are those windows diagnostics. are you running Vista?
The most likely problem i suspect is the power supply, like they said^^^ they are moderately difficult to replace.
Basically replacing a power supply will teach you how the whole computer goes together. There in lies the problem... a power supply for a 4 y/o gateway might be hard to figure out. If you cant find the specs for it, i would need a few HD camera shots of the insides of that bad boy to tell you.
I could walk you through how to individually test the rails but im probably not that ambitious this week.
It would be easier to re-install the OS first and rule out windows derp-a-derp.

Everyone's advice here is solid. There's only so much you can do with windows. System restore usually fixes most issues. Re-installing your OS is definitely the best option but only after you've tried everything else. Which is what everyone has already stated (The diagnostic and repair tools)
But have you tried running it in safe mode for at least 24 hours?
I mean if it runs fine and no issues pop up during that time. Then it's more than likely some software messing everything up. I can't tell you how many times an update with a program has screwed up certain drivers and what not. Or even the windows updates themselves can cause problems too. ehh windows
and if it is due to over heating. There's a program called after burner which allows you to control your fan speed and other settings.
