or coir, but soil is much better for a first timer.

Why should that mean it isn't real?

I totally 100% disagree with this idea. If one wants to grow hydro, he should start there and learn the ropes. In my opinion hydro is far easier, but that's just me. I suck at growing weeds in soil.
And to anwser the OP's question, if you want cheap DWC, tho I'd recommend drip or flood and drain. There are many DIY videos out there to help you learn how to built your own. What is your budget like, and what's your end goal?

Oh I did my first grows in Hydro, DWC. It went great. But a lot of people don't do well with having to keep such a close eye on things. Dirt is so goddamned forgiving.

I just feel like if people don't have any experience in growing, they should get to know the plant. People have been growing in soil for as long as they understood seeds made plants. Its an easier concept for people to pick up IMO, and is easier to not fuck up.
I just really like that other people are trying to grow, and I dislike the idea of anyone being discouraged by a first time fuckup, ya know? I want everyone to have some top shelf smoke haha.

It's funny I hear that about every where I go. Soil is easy, soil is forgiving, etc..... But I find more people having trouble with soil, and losing crops do to over watering over feeding not check ph etc..... In fact roughy 2/3 of threads in the DD forum is soil related.
I find hydro easier and more forgiving, because most mistakes can be fixed in hours instead of days as many find with soil.
It's all opinion of course.

That's an interesting take on it.
I think there's 2 main things that cause people problems with using soil. Not pH balancing, and buying crappy soil. And the latter is people usually trying to be cheap and not getting some decent stuff. I also think people will tend to give ferts to early when they have there plants in soil. But almost all of this is cured by people just doing there research.
