Does a big box NEED to have fans?

Can a box be closed (not air tight) without fans....put smell aside, is it ok? the temps will reach mid 30's C and down to 25C at the extremes. without lights....so with lights (i gotta use fluoro) add another 5C or so i guess.
I am planning on building a fake ceiling into my staircase for them and was wondering if i HAD to have fans...do the plants need airflow?
the box measures about 3 meters by 1.5 meters by 1.5 meters tall.
any input would be groovy

If you put a plastic bag over your head, do you need airflow?
Plants need plenty of fresh air. They need the carbon dioxide to photosynthesize. You'll need an extractor fan capable of replacing the volume of air within your grow space twice over every minute.

Yeah, if the volume of your room was only one cubic foot, a fan rated 2-3cfm should work fine.
Of course, seeing as how you are talking in celsius and meters in your post, fans that you look at in your area might be rated in cubic meters per hour. Anyways, if you considered your space to be 5 foot by 5 foot by 9 foot (rounded up a half foot on the first two because those half feet lengths are fucking up the multiplication and moving the decimal isn't helping ), you'd have 225ft3, which would be the same as 6.37m3. Multiply that by sixty and you'd get 382m3h. I think you'd want an extractor fan around those numbers (depending on which measurement is used).
