Air cooled hood socket question?
    #608486 - 02/05/12 06:25 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

Okay so I just bought a brand new hood for $40, it isn't air cooled, but as some people that have been helping me know I am having heat issues, but I also don't want to spend a lot. Well just came across a good deal. 5 air cooled hoods each with varying problems such as cut power cords and broken sockets even. Now im trying to get more details now. But as long as the hoods are in good shape couldn't I just put my socket on it? BTW these 5 hoods are only gonna cost me $25

Cords have been cut on em all and no glass on any of em just found out.

Okay more info this is what I can get 3 of the other 2 are garbage
http://www.hydrosuppliers.com/product_info.php?products_id=1185

They have broken sockets cut power cords and no glass. So basically i would need to get new glass (is that easy to find) and take my socket from my existing light and put it in this. Is this possible?

Link to the type of hood and what not??  It really depends on what hood it is.

Glass is easy to get.  You can either order them from your local grow store or go to a glass store and they can cut the glass to the dimensions you need.

I'm looking into that hood to see if what your talking about is possible with the cord.  Some hood have sockets that are built into the hood, so without rewiring it that may not be possible.

Another possibility. He said the metal part is okay but the ceramic is cracked. Maybe I could just replace the ceramic part with my ceramic piece and then fix the broken cord? But I got no clue if changing the ceramic piece is even possible

Nope, built in socket and cord.  You would need to rewire it.

The OP's local hydro shop should be able to order replacement parts straight from Hydrofarm.  cord sets, lens and anything else he may need.

I'm pretty sure it's a built in wire though.  Not just one that can be unplugged and replaced, but completely rewired.

Not sure on instillation, was just checking Hydrofarm's website and seen they are available.
But Hydrofarm only sells to dealers so he'd have to order them from a store near him is all I was saying.
I've changed a few of these, and it isn't hard only takes about ten minutes smoking a bowl while doing it.

So overall is it worth the risk to buy em for $25 in your opinion?. Looks like the socket and cords are all garbage

IMO no not really, but it's all in what you want.
You'll save maybe 25 to 30 bucks going that way tho.

Or you could just go with something like this.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/330561018117?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649
I have a couple of these and love them.

how big of a difference is the upgrade from a open reflector to a contained air cooled hood gonna be about?

Yes. My temps at the lowest are 85 unless im blaring ac into my intake duct. I wanna know if this will be a drastic difference just by adding an air cooled hood

I may take my new reflector back to my hydro shop tomorrow and see if they will take it back for something and throw it towards this hood http://www.sunlightsupply.com/p-12208-yield-master-ii-6-classic-reflector.aspx

But I really dont want to spend more money on my grow right now unless its gonna make a big difference. Can't really afford to be doing this right now, but if its worth it i guess i need to

Oh yes and something else I don't fully get. If my air gets sucked through my can filter, then through an air cooled hood and then out then tent, wouldnt the air being sucked into the filter already be hot air, and in that case wouldn't hot air be going through my light and accomplishing nothing?

Should I put my filter low in the tent so cooler air is beind sucked in? Or is just the fact that air is running over my light gonna cool it?

Air running over your light is going to get it cooled down.  But colder air is always better.

Is placing the filter on the ground recommended when using an air cooled hood or leave it up high?

So obviously your fliter is going to be inside your tent then eh??  If so then yes I would put it at the top of your tent, with the fresh air intake for your tent at the bottom.

The filter should be high to remove heat which rises.
The sealed hood is gonna reduce the heat from the bulb which is how it helps cool the room better.

Well I had it outside my tent at first since i have a smaller tent, but I was told that was wrong and when I put it in my tent it decreased temps. But I'm just thinking if I want cooler air to run over my light would it make sense to have my intake low and my filter low so it sucks cool air in the filter then over my light? Right now my filter is up high to suck out hot air but if I leave it high then it will still be hot when it goes through the light? I don't know the correct way but I've seen it both ways in pictures and I don't get which is really correct when you are using an air cooled hood..
You replied as I was typing ...I understand now thanks
