For new wave, Tears for Fears 1983 (first?) album, The Hurting, is some good shit! The hit, "Mad World" you may remember from Donnie Darko, except it's some sad emo playing it on a piano in a different key. Still a very good reinterpretation, in fact. They had more hits later with "Shout" and "Everybody Want to Rule the World" but I think their older stuff is less cheesy 80's and more creative.

Songs from the Big Chair is a fantastic album, in my opinion.
While reflective of music from the era, Tears for Fears entire library is a longshot from cheesy 80's pop.
