Hello everybody, this is my first post on The Growery and this will be my first grow.
I am currently working on the design of a stealth, odor-free and silent grow box. I have already cleared several points, but I would need a little help on the ventilation side.
My post will be separated in three parts : the first part explains what I would like to do, my goals and my constraints ; the second part is about what I still need to figure out in my grow box design, and the third part is a summary of my questions (if you guys would be kind enough to try and answer them )
1. First of all, let me expose you what I plan on doing and what are my constraints :
- I plan on doing a small-scale grow, I don't smoke a lot so I don't necessarily need huge yields. So maybe I'll grow 2 to 3 plants at the same time ? I don't know yet
- My growing chamber will be a small wardrobe, about 1.90*1*0.6 meters (height * width * depth)
- I would like my grow box to be very stealth, that is silent and odor-free. My goal is that I can have somebody walk into the room and not notice there are plants growing in this wardrobe. Also I will be sleeping next to the wardrobe so that's another reason why I want it to be silent.
- I don't want my power bill to explode, so since I am not after huge yields I think I will use a 250W MG lamp which should be more than enough for my needs and has the advantage of not heating too much, as opposed to HID lamps.
- I would like not to spend too much on the items like mylar, extractor, ducting and so on.
So as you can see, my goal is not to get huge yields , I just want some bud but I don't need a lot since I don't smoke too much. However, my main goal is absolute discretion, about smell, noise, and power consumption. My second most important goal is for my grow not to be too expensive. So the main difficulty is to combine my two main goals
2. The main issue in my grow box design
My main issues are about ventilation since this is crucial to controlling the smell, plus this is the main source of noise.
Here's what I am thinking about to address this issue:
- Use an axial extractor (that is, no RVK, no Torin, but an extractor meant to be plugged directly on the ducting). Why an axial extractor ? It seems to be simpler, cheaper, and should be enough for my needs
- Use phonic isolated ducting
- Build a small wooden cube, attached to the top of the growing chamber with small chains to avoid vibrations, this cube will contain the extractor and some phonic isolation material, so that the extractor will be silent. I will then plug some phonic isolated ducting to this cube, and on one side it will go out of the wardrobe, and the other side will be plugged to an active charcoal filter inside the grow box.
- Use an active charcoal filter. Here is a potential problem, since I hear axial extractors don't do too good with ative charcoal filters, because of the losses (not too sure I'm using the right word, but I mean the air flow is reduced because it has trouble getting through the carbon filter).
However, according to my calculations, the entire volume of my growing chamber (I'll lose some space at the top since my ventilation system will be there) should be about 1m3. According to what I read the air in the growing chamber should be entirely replaced every five minutes. One hour is 12 times 5 minutes, so what I need is to be able to extract 12m3 in one hour if I'm not mistaken.
So if I use a extractor wich can extract, say, 280 m3 per hour, even if there are huge losses like the air flow is divided by ten this would still be 28m3 per hour, that is more than twice what I thoerically need. The thing is I have no idea on what losses to expect.
3. The questions I would like a little help on
So now that you know everything about the context of my future grow and my constraints, here are some questions I would be glad to get a little help on if somebody would be kind enough to answer them :
- Are my calculations on air flow correct ? Does it seem like a good idea ? Any potential problems with this setup ? Anyone has more precise data on the losses on air flow I should be expecting ?
- With an MG lamp, heat should not be an issue. Am I right about this ?
- As I said smell control is very important to me, I think I addressed this issue with the use of an active charcoal filter (plus the grow box is pretty small). Do you think it should be enough ? The ventilation system I plan on using looks a bit oversized to me, which leads me to thinking it should be ok, but maybe I'm totally mistaken !
- Of course I am well aware I should grow a strain which does not smell too much, and that's what I'm gonna do, but out of curiosity I wonder how such a system would do with something like Skunk. Would you be able to notice something ?
- Will the active charcoal filter create noise ? If yes, should I include it in a wooden cube like the extractor ?
- Can you think of anything else to reduce the noise even more ? I really want it to be silent, I think what I planned should do the job, especially if I stuff the extractor in a wooden cube filled with isolation material.
Also I will mount a lock on the doors of this wardrobe to avoid any unwanted opening hehe.
Thanks a lot in advance for you answers, I hope I did not ask too many stupid questions !
