First attempt at marijuana defoliation
    #596229 - 11/08/11 08:38 PM (13 years, 1 month ago)

So after years of growing, numerous discussions, and countless amount of hours doing research on this wonderful plant... It's always boils down to do not remove fan leaves their like solar panels for your plant, storing food, and absorbing light for your growing plants. While others saying it wont hurt anything, and if done correctly will increase your yeild. So after sll the discussions over this lop sided debate with most leaning towards "don't remove your fan leaves" I decided to find out for myself. So here you guys go....

These pics are from Nov 5th Day 15 of flowering. I got dirty with these girls and stripped them down.

After doing that I thought to myself what the hell did I just do!

Now these are pics from today Nov 8th a few days later (Day 18 of Flowering). And they look a little something like this...

Today Nov 9th Day 19 of flowering trimmed off a few more fan leaves. After today I probably won't trim off anymore fans leaves until around Day 40 of flowering.

This is how the ladies were looking when I was finished.

So far I'm liking the results of the defoliation technique. Compared to some plants of the same strain, in a grow room with way more  lighting... The defoliated plants are way ahead in bud size. I have now started this practice during veg mixed with a little super cropping, and I can't wait to see the end results. I can already tell there will be many more bud sites on the upcoming batch. Which will start bloom in about a week or so. I'll probably keep you guys posted every few days or weekly with updated bud pics.

Heres some bud pics from Nov 14th Day 24 of flowering. Things are starting to plump up, and all the bottom buds look like they will be used for smoking instead of hash or edible making.

I just realized some of my previous days of flower may be incorrect. But here's an update with the correct flower day. Here's some pics from today Nov. 29th Day 42 of Flower.

i dont get it? is that so lower buds get sun? more leaves mean more energy the plant can make and more energy it can use to have sex...

Yes its so all the bud sites can receive better light penetration with the removal of the fan leaves. I also did it to test how much truth is behind your statement
Quote:

more leaves mean more energy the plant can make

. Since all the plants that I did not defoliate is at a different location, I can't show side by side comparison. But from what I've found so far the plants I defoliated have bigger denser buds. And plants I started defoliating as a clone and all the way through veg produced more bud sites and branched out more causing a shorter bush like plant. But from my experience with this type of training, all my plants will be getting defoliated from here on out.

I heard that the light actually goes through those fan leaves not the spectrum we see though

Man you defoilate a ton. I've thought about trying it, I'm kind of paranoid though.

In order to grow good weed you need to be part carpenter, electrician, plumber, biologist, geneticist, chemist, and very willing to get dirty.

I've been working with power tools since I was 8, my dad is an electrical engineer who owned a 280 gal fish tank, and I studied biology with a specialty in genetics. Getting dirty comes naturally. I think my parents inadvertently trained me to be a weed grower.

See what you think on my first try.

Sorry for the lack of recent updates, I left my camera at a family members house.

Yeah I do defoliate a bunch, but I found the techniques works a lot better when started during veg. The result was tons of branching, with a lot of tops and budsites when put into flower. On my next set of plants I will defoliate all the way through veg, and right before putting into bloom. I will then defoliate again after the stretch period is over probably around day 21 of flower, then I will repeat around day 48 of flower. I'll keep you guys updated probably in a new thread. But I will upload a few dried bud pics from the plants above a little later today.

I decided to defoliate my main plant completely (as it was in its final weeks) and got kind of burned as a result. The considerably less shade on the soil caused it to dry out quicker than I thought. By the time I got to it the damage was done. I must say I am impressed with what I see so far.
