I've tried playing Othello with a friend, but we can't seem to log on at the same time. The game sets us against the computer even though it says that we are in fact playing each other.

That's the way the challenge system is for any game. I don't think its really feasible to play live, multi-player games through the Growery. What happens is it compares the scores and decides who won that way.
