Trying to start growing

This is my first post here, so here it goes... Ive always read up on growing indoors but it has only ever stayed a dream. Now that I'm at my own place it might soon become a reality.
I sort of got the basics down and now im trying to read up on more in-depth information. But i still have questions at this stage.
The area Im working with is my closet. Its about 3'x3'x5'. I know its a small area but i mainly just want to get experience. Since its my first grow, I was thinking of starting off with 4 plants, but im not sure how much i would be able to fit into my small area. And it also depends on what lights i end up choosing.
The smell is no problem at all, there is constantly a lingering smell of marijuana anyways.
I plan on probably having a small computer fan on the top as the exhaust fan with a hole near the bottom for fresh air to come in. I also want to put in an oscillating fan to blow on the plants to promote fresh air.
My main problem is lights. I was going to use florescent for my first time, specifically a 4 Foot 2 Lamp High Output T5, with one bulb to bloom and one bulb to grow. Is this sufficient lighting for my area? And about how many plants could i properly grow off these. Its says these lights *could* produce 10,000 lumens.
what im wondering is, will this be a sufficient setup to start off with, and eventually upgrade as i learn more.
Thank you.

It sounds like you have it down, but why not use CFLS instead of the T5's? In a smaller setup, space is everything, and CFL would provide the same effect as a T5, just in a smaller space.
If you're worried it wouldn't provide lighting for lower branches, you could always have some supplemental lighting down below.
Not hating on the T5s, just wondering why you chose that.
-------------------- Of course it's happening inside your head.
Why should that mean it isn't real?

I think t5's are ok to start off with, and veg with.... but when it's time to flower you will be dissapointed with the results from a 2 bulb T5.
Might be better off picking up a 400w hps or CMH for flowering.

1st question is grow space size. You said 3x3x5. Is that 3 ft wide x 4 ft long x 3 ft high? Your talking 4 ft long T5s.
2nd question, what is your budget?
I grew for years under T12's. Makes light buds but damn good smoke.
Edit: Welcome to the Growery.

My budget is about 120$ I know its not a lot but i plan on upgrading as i go along.
Wouldnt CFL's require more fixtures though?

You can make your own fixture. For 120$ I would get 6 42cfls (about 10$ each at Ace or HD), piece of wood 2.5 ft x 2.5 ft ($20 for a nice sturdy one w/ a white finish at most hardware stores), some kind of adheasive & gorilla tape ($15ish) and wireage+sockets(1.49 n extention cord x3; Y socket x3; comes out to $20 max). Use the adheasive to attach extentions (evenly spaced of course), then fixate by taping THE WHOLE BOARD including the cord sockets (make knife holes where you need to plug in the bulbs - adds support to the bulb as well). Then plug Ysockets in and done. I did this exact thing, and the only problem I had was hanging the fixture...but if gorrila tape can hold 12 of these bulbs & the board im pretty sure it'll hold 6
P.S. Get all daylight bulbs if you can spend another 60$ when you go to flowering. If not get 3 soft white & 3 daylight. Also if you think the smell will be "lingering", you are mistaken. I have 1 lowryder auto flowering atm, and my whole house reeks btw I can post some pics if my explanation was confusing.

Ok, 6 bulbs 42 watts each is about 250 watts. This is just enouph for a 2x2 area. there is no fixed number of plants you can grow. you can do scrog and fill 4sq,ft with 1 plant, or sog w/ 16 plants in the same 4 sq.ft. If you want to grow regular plants , I would do 2 plants (30 days of veg). You can also fit 4 autoflowers in gallon pots.

My advice to you is save up about 300$ and invest into: 600watt hps Air-coolable reflector inline fan+ducting
That would be perfect for the closet youre using. You can do like 4 full sized plants in that setup...i dont have much expirience but I deffinetly saw a difference when I swiched to HID (from 500watts cfl to 400watt hps).

I think i will wait then, because ive read a lot and everyone says hps are the way to go. I definitely think that is a better way to go.
