I went to a dispensary to buy some clones and the person working there told me that they lose potency when you clone the plant. I told him he didn't know what he was talking about and if he understood why they used the word clone. Anyway, we argued for awhile, but then I started to think I might be wrong, can anyone give me a definite answer with a source please?

as far as i know, he's full of shit and just wants you to buy his bud.
edit: and most likely his bud came from clones as well. people clone for a reason, better yields, better results, higher potency. with seeds its a genetic gamble.

No, they don't lose potency when you clone a plant. Most breeders, for instance, keep clones of their male and female plant, and that is how they produce the same strains that everyone buys and loves. Also, consider the "elite" clone-only plants that get passed around different cities and countries. There is the question of senescence; essentially the theory is that after the same cell divides so many times, it all starts to die, something about chromosomes getting a little shorter each time, but there isn't any definite example of this occurring with marijuana, and if it is a concern, it clearly doesn't come into effect for many, many years. A clone is an exact genetic replica, technically the same plant of course, and the only thing that is going to cause it to lose potency compared to its mother is growing conditions. Also, the possibility of the line becoming diseased along the way could also come into play, but, again, that is growing conditions. I've seen a few people state that they've been growing the same strain from clone for around twenty years with no noticeable sign of senescence. 
Also, if senescence was a concern, it would be recognized when it became clear that it was occurring, so why throw away the enormous benefits of cloning if the line might begin to get diminished after so many years.
