What do you know about digital cameras?

I have a digital camera, but I know that there is something similar to a MAC address on each individual camera. Basically, there is a serial number of some sort so that whatever image you upload to the internet can be traceable.
I remember reading this on some other tech site, but that was a long time ago. Is it true? Is there a way to remove this serial number?
I'm sure it's not a big deal to post some incriminating pictures and what not, because there are always bigger fish to fry, but still, I would love to know exactly what the term is for this 'serial number'.

One easy way to remove any photo meta data is to screenshot all your photos and then just use the screenshot file when you upload it
this also makes resizing to an appropriate size super easy if you have a high res camera
I wouldnt really be worried about digital cameras so much as cell phones cause im pretty sure with lots of phones they can trace back photos to where and when they were taken, what wifi signal you were connected to, etc...
