TIMERS Digital or Analog *** Any Melt Downs?
    #571377 - 07/11/11 08:05 PM (13 years, 4 months ago)

What to hear what kind of timers your using.
How long you've been using them. What Brand?

Had any melt downs or close fires or worse?
Any kind of problem.

Three of my timers are 3 years old. Three are new HydroFarm analog.
The old ones are from Walmart. Two analog that just stopped working and a digital that started missing start up time but upon farther inspection had the plug side going to the light showing burn marks(getting hot).Bummer

Has anyone used the ones for outside sprinkler systems? Lowes, HomeDepot

Got any suggestions?

I've used two Stanley digital outdoor timers with backup battery rated for 15A and 1875W.  One was used to feed an octopus plug carrying a 714 watt total load (measured at the plug).  It worked fine for two years, but recently the octopus plug that fed from the timer literally melted into the timer box!  Quite concerning to say the least, fortunately the power was cut before anything could burn, but the thing was wrecked, as the octopus plug was completely fused into the timer unit.

The other timer of the same make has been used to power a 185 watt maximum load and has shown no signs of trouble.  Nevertheless, a timer rated for 1875W getting wrecked from a 714W load?  If anyone has suggestions for more reliable units, I am all ears!
