my 1st plants... Any Advice???
#568159 - 06/28/11 08:29 PM (13 years, 5 months ago) |

I have just set up an account and will begin to post about my two little guys. Many plants sprouted in my smoke spot back in April. Out of them I kept these two just for fun. They are currently outside in good Ol' dirt. I only fertilize them twice a month with some Superthrive. They drink about a gallon of water every other day. I just topped them and they both turned black just at the cut spot.
Does anyone know why that turned black?? Should I be worried?
I am considering tying the branches down with a fishing line. Any advice, criticism, or other input would be much appreciated.

fyi...superthrive is not a fertilizer. It can be used at every watering, but they'll need more than just that. Use some stretchy landscape ties to tie the girls down. I pick mine up at a local hardware store. It'll stretch with the plant. Fishing line may not be so forgiving. Unless you're able to check on them frequently. If they're in good soil and getting good light....they'll take right off.

honestly just cover the girls in composted manure and let the water do the rest of the work. they should turn out fat.

Usually if you top them and they bleed red and it turns black the soil is a little to acidic.. By any chance did you see a tiny drop of red form after you topped?

I got some Osmocote today at Walmart for fertilizer. It's 19 6 12. Also added some mulch to keep them drinking. Those bands sound good. 'll check them out asap. new pics coming soon.

So added some mulch and topped them both. Still considering to stake them or not, what would be the best way?
These pics are after just one day of mulch and being topped, the mulch has now been doubled.

I added some Osmocote today. also ordered some fox farm Open Sesame, Beastie Bloomz, and Cha Ching for August. I plan on giving them the fox farm to induce flowering. good plan?

I think your plants would turn out better without chemical fertilizer or hydroponic fertilizers. Just use some manure in the beginning of the growth cycle. The plants use all the nitrogen and by the end start using the potassium and phosphorus. Since their already in the ground there probably is already a lot of nutrition there and its also likely that there are a lot of beneficial soil micro-organisms which will always make for a healthier plant than chemical fertilizers like osmocote. In fact osmocote will piss off the micro-organisms making your plant more dependent on the artificial shit IMO.

well the soil is pretty much trash so I figured a fertilizer would improve the quality of buds and keep my plant strong. What do yall think of Superthrive? I've heard a lot of people using it every watering but just twice a week seems to be causing a white salt ring to rise in the soil..

superthrive is the shit! but lay off a little. don't water so often and let nature do a little of the work. which may be a bit of a problem in texas, yall always seem to have drought in the summer. chemical ferts are full of salts, but your plants don't seem to be suffering from any salt buildup. might want to give organics a shot, like some fish emulsion. then lay the blossom boosters on em in sep. best of luck, hope you wind up with twin girls

They're def looking better and better.Plant A has, since being topped, shot out two tops. Plant B on the other hand just kept growing straight up. Topped her again today to see what happens. Still unsure about staking the branches out just yet. They seem to move a lot side to side with the sun throughout the day and I don't want to cause them to strain....

Fan leaves are the solar panels of your plant. Removing some will do more harm than good.... Let'em be. This is my oppinion....which i know is shared by many others. Though there has been some discussion on the topic. Just ask magash...he'll give ya the whole solar panel example

so check it.... Plant B is a male on the left side of a tree and Plant A is unknown on the right side. So i was thinking of doing a little construction and removing B (male) completely and transplanting A to the better spot. The reason for the transfer is that B has always seem to have the better spot as far as sunlight and level ground and bugs. A has riddled with bug bites and has always fell to an akward position at the end of the day.... WHAT DO WE SAY??? Can I move A into B's old spot?????

its gonna shock the shit out of her considering its roots are a good 4 ft deep by now. so if your willing to risk that shock go for it, just make sure you do it at night and have plenty of water on hand to ease the transition.

NO don't move it!!!
that s/r fert you got ... how long does it take to dissolve? the way I see it at present is your plants will boom at first because of these ferts but if the ferts aren't dissolved and gone before flowering begins your yield will suffer because those ratios are wrong for best flowering.... or if yr plants get too much Nitrogen they may not flower at all! NO BULL! happened to me.
take it easy on the chemical ferts. you didn't need them. work out NOW what your plants will need for best flowering ... cheers

yeah I scrapped the move idea. I have Osmocote in the soil and it is s/r for 4 month 19-6-12. I had no idea nitrogen could prevent it from flowering. It's only been there 26days... Well any suggestions now???

mate I don't know where you live (tell me what is the latitude of yr area, altitude, close to the ocean/not).
in any case you will be past the summer equinox and the sun is shortening ... so yr plants will be getting ready to flower. so, can you remember date you put the O/coat on? when's it's 'time' up?
you should still be able to see the fert pearls lying around if they're not dissolved. get a lawn rake and carefully rake away as much of the stuff as you can.
if you're able to take the unused stuff away yr plant's probly had enuf fert for a while. then begin looking for a flowering fert with less than 10% N, around 5% P and 8 or more K. but don't put any on yet. give the plant a 'rest' from ferts for a while.
let me know how you go

Alright so the top 2" of soil and mulch was removed, pretty sure a lot of the fert was removed cause it was only mixed in the mulch. New layer of soil and new mulch, watered heavy w no ferts.

sound great! now just wait and watch for the flowers to begin and when you see this, fert for flowering. some people use flowering fert with N as low as 1. and some people foliar spray liquid potash with a small percentage of phosphates in it ... ideally this foliar spraying should begin two weeks before flowering ... but that'll be hard for a new grower to spot. try tho'. always keep a close eye on wot yr plant's doin.

as far as ferts i got kind of a sample pack from a friend. It's 3 small bags of FF Open Sesame, Beastie Bloomz, and Cha Ching. I have been following his instructions by giving them the FF OS 1st at pre-flowering as you suggested and follow suit in the order given above. My problem is here Open Sesame says it is 5-45-19 and the Beastie Bloomz is 0-50-30... Can I switch the them????? That would make it Beastie Bloomz, Open Sesame, and than Cha Ching to finish up.(9-50-10 btw) Any thoughts or disagreements????

follow the feeding chart. Look it up on ff's website if you don't have it. As far as when your girl's gonna start flowering....just keep an eye on the day light hours. It's listed in my paper..that's how i know. Soon as we hit 14 hrs in my area they start to do their thing.

another heavy watering just to be sure this morning, added 1/8 tsp of FF open sesame which is 5-45-19. There's def little budsites forming so probably only 2 more weeks and then a switch to beastie bloomz 0-50-30.
