Our Government is Missing Out on a $10,000,000,000 / Year Opportunity! Legalizing Marijuana

Why can't the government understand that by legalizing marijuana they will SAVE $7.7 billion a year in enforcement costs and MAKE $6.2 billion a year in taxation. There's nearly $10,000,000,000 a year that could go to something good for the country instead of this pointless prohibition.
Source
Quote:
Milton Friedman leads a list of more than 500 economists from around the U.S. who publicly endorse a Harvard University economist's report on the costs of marijuana prohibition and the potential revenue gains from the U.S. government legalizing it and taxing its sale. Ending prohibition enforcement would save $7.7 billion in combined state and federal spending, the report says, while taxation would yield up to $6.2 billion a year.
They could be MAKING money instead of SPENDING it... You would think our greedy government would be all for it.
Let me hear your thoughts on this. Some people say money is the reason our government won't legalize it but that's obviously not the case...

Milton Friedman is dead, and I HIGHLY doubt he would be an advocate for taxing marijuana.
Edit to give you a decent answer to your question: Marijuana isn't legalized because although it would help reduce the growth of our federal deficit, it would not financially benefit any politician, and really that is their chief concern. They would most likely lose their donation from the pharmaceutical industry and from the christian-right, to name a few opponents of marijuana legalization. In the current political climate the only way there will be legalization is when the marijuana lobby has more money than the rest of these groups, and it's not gonna happen.
The best we can do as citizens is exercise our right to nullification, whereby a jury refuses to make a judgement of guilt on the basis they view the law as unjust.

I agree, it should be decriminalized for people over the age of 21 who meet the same requirements to own a firearm. So no people with major felonies, or mental issues that they have been INVOLUNTARILY committed for. And no prior domestic violence charges, ect.
Then you pay it just like Fuel Tax
I think it's a good idea. Wont happen but still is a good one. I know for a fact that big tabacco companies could quickly start producing high THC marijuana in a mass produced way that could be marketed the exact same way.
Plus this new drop in price and regulation would hurt Mexicans who smuggle weed in and people growing low-grade stuff here in the states. Everything would be dank
