Any Bass Players?

I've had a bass like my whole life but have always kind of sucked, but recently after years of guitar I think i can finally understand this bass thing. Any bass players here have any books or links that are good for a beginner to intermediate, I want to learn some old soul style bass lines. The last song i learned was charlie dont surf by the clash....... so that's about where I'd put my ability level at this time.

He also flowered 10 OG Kush x ECSD seeds that I let him grow on the condition I'd get clones from the best females. He ended up chopping all the girls 2 weeks early and smoking them without making any clones.
So you are correct, fuck that guy hard.

I play a little bass as well as guitar. One of the better tips I've gotten is to play with the melody of the song. Of course everyone pretty much plays different. If you're just really starting out, try to just play the rythym of the root note. Seems to work when you're not really sure what to do. A "when in doubt" kind of thing. Listen to the bass player for the Allman Brothers. Fuckin sick.

I love the Allman Brothers seen them live at 2-3 festivals like 6 nights worth. Always a great show.

Master basser here, well not really
I've been playing since ~03 but I don't have the attention span to keep with it for extended periods of time I can play a few songs but I hate to say I'm any good
this past year I finally learned to play with a pick I used to be totally against a bassist using a pick but I really like the punk/alternative sort of sound so it just makes more sense

We don't hate bassists who play with picks. Just bassists who can't play any other way. There's a place for both.

you know what i did in english class? I came to class stoned out of my mind every day, i chugged vodka in the back of class, i put dead fish in the ceiling tiles. i put a gallon of old milk and orange juice in the file cabinet before winter vacation. i brought snakes in a tied up sweater and let them loose during class. i didnt go to school to learn, i went because i had to. i didnt care, and i didn't fucking listen to that stupid bitch. and i still don't fucking care. i tore the pages out of her books and burned them, and threw away all the books in the class, two books per day.

Word. I use a pick, but I play in a punk band. Lots of country players do as well, that sharp attack is tough to get any other way. I can also play finger style and slap & pop, tho. Not good to get locked into one technique.

I need to get better at slap/pop. I probably play finger-style for the most part, for tone and accuracy. Though, I will go for the pick for faster playing and better attack.
Anyone use a rubber pick, or something else? What about alternating plectrum within the same piece?

hey I can teach bass guitar, are you looking for technique or theory?
do you just want to learn to play some songs? because that's not learning to play the bass, or music for that matter.

I know you weren't talking to me, but I'd like to hear some theory on playing the bass and not just some songs if you've got the time. I'd appreciate it.

ok, for a VERY basic intro to simple music theory, start by researching the concepts I lay out here:
to get you started, learn all the 'intervals' first! An interval is the range between two notes.
Then learn which intervals are in the standard western 'major scale' and then which intervals make the chords (diads, triads, etc); major, minor, dominant, augmented, suspended and diminished are all types of chords.
Then learn the 'diatonic chords'. Remember that word, 'diatonic', it means within the scale. The diatonic chords are chords that use only notes found within the scale we're using, whatever that may be.
Once you learn the way that the intervals make the chords and the the way the chords fit into the scale (diatonic harmony), learn the different 'modes' of the major scale (different starting and ending points within the same scale).
I could go on for hours, any specific questions? maybe I should start a music theory thread?
